Terradomes

Can it be done?
So many ppl ask for this outside , not in a spaceship map. What about terra-domes(In a space ship setting)? Think of "Event Horizon'...........several sections or bubbles that house flora , if you could create this it would not only relieve us all of the 'outdoor map syndrome' but would add a very diverse element.

Um, there was no greenhouse in Event Horizon... Maybe you meant the Lost In Space movie, like scenes on the Prometheus?

Anyways, I think this has been answered in some way before, in that they would not fit the dark theme that NS is trying to set. Dont let that stop you tho, but if you make one, your map will probably not be considered for inclusion as an official map in any future release of NS.

This was actually my first map idea for NS. A group of domes connected with undergound tunnels and an aboveground glass walkway. I abandoned it due to the dificulty of making a dome that looks good from the inside.

Yeah, you'd have to make a geodiesic (SP) dome with triangles or soemthing, which would take a bit of math, and a bit of planning to do.

It's quite possible though,

Hmmm. For a second I thought this thread was about a Public Enemy song. I need more coffee.

Certainly possible. I would love to see a map with something like that. A tricky proposition with HL though...

Ya, it's very very possible..considering it is one of the areas in my map

In one of my labs aboard O.D.L.E Research Station there is a simulated habitat...trees, plants and a lil waterfall...

MonsE, not that big a deal cause the trees are essentially cylinders with a bit of a flange at the bottom and the plants are pretty much just sprites....waterfall is care of the beautiful but often benign particle system (e.g. look steam from a pipe! oooooh&#33

BioHaz, I disagree - outdoor areas aren't within the theme of NS but indoor outdoor areas are yet to be discussed

MonsE, not to go off topic - but your avatar looks strangely like the lead singer from Mr Big...

Look up NS_Jungle. Thats a nice example of an indoor bio-area.

Also with respect to the dome, and tith the difficulty of making it look good from the inside. I presume you had difficulty in making the glass look correctly "curved".

If thats the case, don't include it! Just make up some fancy excuse like, some kind of forcefield, or that the glass is really, really clean

When I mentioned 'Event Horizon' it was for ship structure , I know there was no terradomes in it. Thx guys , me getting ideas.

I'd say vince neal after he got old ,bald , and...............um..................drank to many beers.

Nutz, Daxx said it first. Yeah, there was actually an NS map around here called ns_jungle that was doing just that.

The only thing? Even the biodome idea has to be done in a way to -add- to the whole effect of 'sterile metallic space environment'. Trees and grass and pretty stuff like that can seriously detract from that, which stands a good chance at getting the map not considered for official status.

But.............if the plants had not been watered in say.............a few years , then what?
• MoleculorMoleculor Namer-of-Bob Join Date: 2002-01-24 Member: 9Members
It'd probably work. That's actually something along the lines of something I was (and might still be) planning in a map I drew out moons ago.
• LegionnairedLegionnaired Join Date: 2002-04-30 Member: 552Members, Constellation
Oh you can make it work.. It just takes math...

And who lieks that?

A glass dome would be 999999 wpolys......
• 10RoUNdTOmMYgUN10RoUNdTOmMYgUN Join Date: 2002-05-03 Member: 572Members
no need for a glass dome , maybe just a skylight at the top and a few around the sides. Would that drop the it a bit?
• BattousaixBattousaix Join Date: 2002-06-25 Member: 822Members
Not really, if you wanna make a dome, you will need like 100 faces atleast, that would be hella lot of fps´s.....
The only thing that may work would be a room with some glasses on the ceiling with trees...... and you should really take care of the fps too......

The heck with glass domes, make it a self-contained rectangular metal room with overgrowth slowly leading into infestation. Add some busted artificial sunlight lamps and leaking/broken irrigation systems, and some dying jungle vegetation, and you have a broken-down ecosystem.

actually this would fit into a hive area, becuase the infestation coulda' messed with the plants bio-molecular structure or something...

just think:

Skulk + Cloaking + Hive room stuff + Jungle + Marine = Marine peeing pants, scarred outta wits what is around that corner and wondering if he is in view of hive sight.

I LOVE IT!

and i think a way to cut down on FPS would be to make it a pyramid that has multiple "steps" and then just make some brushes that "smooth" it out some on the inside. basically make it a rough shape, then just put in some thin cubes, skew, stretch, etc and ur done w/o needing math!

fools, there's always another way.

I try to avoid these posts where outdoors areas are discussed (do a search and find out why), but I do agree with maveric: A contained, rotted-out-vegitation infested area would make for a pretty killer hive room.

Makin acceptable plants on the hl engine requires a huge amount of polys, and if you wanna also add details on the walls, growth, the hive, and some extra framerate for the combat = you probablly can´t make that hive room
• DreadDread Join Date: 2002-07-24 Member: 993Members
Hey, maybe you could put there some EVIL and CREEPY looking plants that has been mutanted in to that way because of the hive infestation. And then ofcourse the room would be dark and when you walk thru them you would start gettin 1 point damage/3sec or so. Just for atmosphere
