You can't say its not both. It would be hard to deny that is political... But its also hard to deny that it is also religious. One just has a higher priority than the other it seems... <!--QuoteEnd--> </td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'> <!--QuoteEEnd-->
I will deny it's a religious issue. Why would I say that, living in the heart of Southern Baptism and also a large amount of Catholics centered around my home? Because frankly put religious advocation in many areas has very little to do with the religion itself and a whole lot more to do with: a) where you're publicly putting your money, b) conformity to those around you, and c) politics. When senatorial candidates 6 years ago were doing sunday sermons in a baptist church, that's when it really clicked with me. Religion in this nation is little more than a special interest group. Guess what homosexual advocates are? a special interest group. Guess what the NRA is? a special interest group. Guees what the EPA and PETA are? special interest groups. Just because the president happens to be more favorably inclined towards a christian special interest does NOT make it a Christian issue. Although there are writings in the Bible that deal directly with the moral "wrongs" of homosexuality, I personally believe that is more to control social deviancy within a particular group (read: christians) than it is to back groups that carry signs like "GOD HATES HOMOS [change homos to something that begins with F and ends in "ag"]" like you see in all the highlights on the news. While I'm not going to say that many christians do object to homosexual marriages, I will go out on a limb and say that this is nothing more than Bush pandering to his constituent base. You think he's allowed to have something related to a substantive opinion of his own in an election year? If so, I hope that you grow out of that....not saying that as an attack, but more as a true hope that you come to more fully understand the political situation in which our government operates.

I don't think anyone is arguing it isn't a political issue Rat, I for one am arguing that it's a state's rights issue. Just because a president is favored among conservative states does not mean he can pass legislation that affects the whole nation.

Just like the fact that Bush supports the death penalty does not mean he can pass an amendment to force every state in the union to make it legal. The supreme court has already thrown out laws that make **** sex illegal, and they will also throw out any law that makes **** marriage illegal on a national level.

Personally I think Bush lost more votes than he will ever gain with his strong stances on abortion and **** marriage, so much for aiming towards the middle.

Um, I really don't see it the same way as you. I support Civil Unions between ****'s but the right to marry should be left up to the church as it is their job. I do have to agree though that amending the constitution is rather ridiclous.
