Well.. "slashdotted" is normally the result of high traffic... i'm pretty sure they are just having server trouble, i'd say.

To expand on that, a "slashdoting" occurs when a slashdot news blurb links to a host with insufficient badwidth to deal with the number of hits they recieve as a result of the linking.

they had an article recently about google's logo image link slashdotting a little page it linked to, and then of course they posted the page, effectively tripling the hit count to the poor fractal server image host

There's a few sites that have the power of the death star on the internet when it comes to posting links. So, far the one's I've seen taking websites down are Slashdot and Penny Arcade. I'm sure there's more, but irunno.

Beh slashdot goes out every once in a while anyway, just not normally for long. Sometimes you just have to compile a new kernel

I would assume though that the site runs on several load-balanced servers, not just on one box. Anyone know for sure?

Don't ever speak wrongly of Slashdot, Slashdot is safe, Slashdot is sound!

And yes Monsieur the site does run on several load-balanced servers, i'm pretty sure of that.

If I remember right it runs on at least three servers as of their last move. Not sure how they are interconnected, though.

Odd that they managed to kill all 3 - unless they screwed up their load-balancer. Nubs!

What, they can dish it out but they can't take it? Double nub! I like how they act like it never happened - can you imagine if Yahoo or Google or Microsoft were down for an hour every few months? /. would ride them like a pony!
