    1) Port scaning = so what?
Port Scanning is not necesarily a malicious thing.

If you want the fallout shelter, steps:
    1) Get a Fire Wall (I like just ussing ym lynkSys Router, it works realy well)
    2) Enable it
    3) <a href='https://www.grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2' target='_blank'>Shileds Up</a> use it.

You can infact use shields up before doing all these things to see if you do have any ACTUALY security risks <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->

As for CC info being compramised.....

    1) Run AdAware and a Virus Scan
    2) DON'T USE UNSECURE SITES! (nuff said, this will stop most of it)
    3) Don't sweat it. All you have to do is contact the company and they will promptly drop all charges and kill the CC (it is NOT in their best intrest to persue these claimes any further)

Download Ez-Armor, its basically a firewall and anti-virus package.

The firewall is basically ZoneAlarm Pro, and its all free (for one year)

Don't store credit card information on your computer?

Software firewalls are like stickers on a car. They 'look' good (well, they don't but doesn't matter), while the actual chasis gives the true look.

Same with firewalls. All software ones like ZoneAlarm are... Well... Not 'it'. If you want a firewall, get a hardware one (like a router).

You know, your chances are actually better buying things online tahn they are at a store. After all, its just a computer reading in your CC card when you buy online, everything is automated and w/ no human interaction. If you go to a grocery store though, if they're using a certain type of cc auth system then as soon as you leave all the cashier has to do is hit his 'reprint' button. Boom, he has your full cc number, expiration date, and your name.

You never really were clear on the problem here. You say things like the credit card number has been found out, but by whom? You mean somebody haxed you or the site you were buying and stole it (in which case they police should be notified so said hax0r can go to jail like the rest), or a family member found the info on your computer itself and used it?

weeeeeee, the wonders of auto fill and, cookies to remember your CC, and the and friken forgetting to switch CCs when you are ordering something <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->

but yah, doomeh has it spot on for the most part, so long as you aint silly online its GENERALY safer.

And as for the gov going after haxzorz, they don't. For the most part identity theft is just not gone after (it takes some heafty things for the police to bother going after them, same deal with the cc companies)

that is unless things have changed recently... have they?

Cookies don't remember your credit card number.

At least, they don't if its not a shady site out to steal your cc number anyway.

All a cookie would store would be your login name and, in the case of things where security isn't a big priority (such as these boards), your password (encrypted of course).

While there certainly is a potential for malicious cookie abuse, most people's view on them is a bit unfounded. More likely any bad thing that would happen due to cookies would be stuff like web site tracking (where you've been, what you click on, etc) for the purposes of determining a demographic and then offering you products based on said demographic that you're more likely to buy.

correction, was speaking of cookies in terms of who I log in as for certain sites....

infact, not cookeis, just web pages remembering my wrong CC/adress info.

    yup, Thansal was compleatly wrong as perusual <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->

(what happened was me picking the wrong shipping/cc info when I was ordering some stuff from amazon when I was at home. Stuff got sent to school... during summer vactaion... doh.)
