Xfire?

<div class="IPBDescription">is it worth it?</div> I just noticed the xfire option that came along with beta 3 - 3 and the xfire list sticky. Is xfire worth installing? I've already got enough messenger services as it is and unless it offers something particularly amazing I'm happy lounging with MSN and steam friends (when it works =P )

    Not really. I got it anyway, just because. I'm hoping that a Trillian Pro plugin is made for it soon.

    To qoute one of the XFire guys who posted in the General Discussion forum about people saying it was spyware. and for more general info on what it does/ how it works.

    <!--QuoteBegin--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->The installer does run a program which installs what's called an LSP, which does plug into the Winsock chain of data. Xfire uses this to detect which game servers you connect to, so your friends can join you in a game. Here's how it works:

    You run Xfire, then launch an online game, for example Halo. When you connect to a game server, the LSP sees this, and tells the Xfire client "We're playing Halo on the game server at 192.168.25.59 port 7777" (for example). The Xfire client then sends this data to an Xfire server which sends the data to your friends. Your friends' Xfire clients show this information. If your friend hits the Join button, then Halo is launching using command line parameters to join your game server at 192.168.25.59 port 7777.

    Xfire looks at your network connections only for games, and then it only looks at WHO you connect to, so your friends can join you. It never looks at the actual data you send or receive.

    There are a few programs that install LSPs that have problems when another LSP is installed, such as an old version of Zone Alarm, as well as some spyware LSPs. You should remove these, as they can cause you to have network problems when you have another LSP installed, whether it's the Xfire LSP or anything else.

    I wasn't really worried about anything containing spyware but thanks for the info davis =3

    I was kinda more interested in what it did better chat-wise than anything else, like allowing more than 5 people in a group chat or playing games like go or chess or cards with friends ^^

    Not really worth it, and apparently ugly to boot... banner ads all over the place. About all it does 'well' is tell you what game your friends are playing, and where.

    So it's kinda like Steam, just a meta-client... if you have friends playing Evercrack or BF1942, it'll still be able to tell you where and let you chat with them.

    Sorta like they took Steam and ASE, slapped them together, and slathered banner ads all over the place. In short, it gets my thumbs-down.

    (edit) And Gem, it looks like you've exceeded your transfer limit on wherever you have it stored. Jimmeh may just have it cached.. I'm seeing the 'bandwidth limit exceeded' graphic instead, too. (/edit)

    I have? aw fudge -.-
    I'll put up a temp or something while uploadit sorts itself out... that or I find someone who hosts gifs ^^;

    <b>edit:</b> ooh! looks like increasing the 'loss' on it I can reduce it from 2.08kb to under the 2kb board hosting limit =3

    Ok, so Xfire is an option in the NS install (for Steam...) to join friends' games, message them.etc. Steam has a friends list already. Therefore, I don't see the value in installing a redundant program that was kind of sneakily included.
    End discussion,rawr.

    Yes and No. Its nifty for beta, its sleek, and very lightweight. It is obviously beta. Not a nessecity however Flayra would like us to use it so I created an accout "just because".
