I'm very glad you all think the general concensus of the boards is very good, and i think i'd have to agree with you. But consider this. You're all basing this off of other trashy boards. We don't want this to be a trashy board! The level of excellence that has been established here must be maintained. So while we are excellent compaired to "them", i would say we're only above average compaired to what we were only a year ago.
When I joined in July of 2002, there was not a single flame-like post ever. Everyone had something constructive to say. And as Doom and several others have said, this is due to the lower member count, meaning the people there were the ones serious about the mod. Now that we've gained so many people though, we're starting to attract the lesser-sought, less mature members. And in all fairness i would have to say that a good number of the more mature members have joined in recent months who have contributed more to the community than some of the beginning members have.
I suppose i'm just ranting now, but it is something that has been nagging at the back of my mind for a few weeks and had to say something about it.

I think it has dropped slightly, but it is still very high. I think it is due to the nature of NS. It take intelligence to play and enjoy it, so the people who do not enjoy it (the "leet CS players") don't come here.
Sorry to burst your nostalgia here, Bel, but we got our first troll back in June 2001, called 'Fluorescent Duck'. He was forum member number four. Since then there was no time devoid of flamwars or inconstructive posts - we just tend to forget both faster than the actually meaningful content.
I'm honored and humbled by the amount of positive feedback towards the mods and admins, but honestly, I really don't see our contribution as this big. All we can do is throw the bad eggs out - we aren't responsible for the presence of the good ones. NS isn't (or wasn't, before combat) a big, blasty game. So basically, the people who would usually be causing the trouble on the boards (CS kiddies, hax0rz etc) don't stay in the game long enough to be bothered coming to the forums anyway. Apart from the odd one or two who think we care that NS sucks because it doesn't have 10 million weapons.
But anyway, i've noticed that the boards started declining since the day i joined and started posting....

I haven't seen a decrease at all. Maybe even a bit of a increase- I personally haven't seen one flamewar, no one seriously hates anybody(that I've seen, anyway), and from what I can tell, were the big happy family we always were. A few joking topics on something thats serious, but usually we get back to it right after the joke.
I like the boards just how they are....I'd rather have some immature people than people who have their thumbs up their a** the whole time

I can guarantee that people on these boards hate other people on the boards. I myself have one member of this community I can't stand and would love to tell off. The nice thing about this community, is that despite these urges, no one seems to post their hatred for one another. Perhaps, we're just mature enough to realize that yelling at someone over a message board really doesn't do any good, so its best to just ignore those who anger us.
I've seen both flamewars and trolls on these boards. It's nothing bad though, as every community will get some of those due to the nature of the internet. Overall, I'd have to say I see much fewer flames here than I see on the couple other boards I check. I really can't say what the difference is, but for some reason these boards due better. If anyhting,I think it helps that the moderators aren't just voices of law, but rather members of the community who you can talk and joke around with.
Btw, anyone have any theories why offtopic seems to be much tamer than some of the other forums here? My theory is that trolls don't like to scroll down
Though the constant moderation makes flamewars mathematically impossible (post edited before the offended person has the time to read it ) , sarcasm shouldn't be punished... sure that's not the nicest form of humor but honestly , could we keep talking of our archenemies as fluffy gorgies all day
Anyways , Off Topic is nice and all but I don't think that's the most constructive forum. It really lacks controversial subjects... like game balance , comm strategies and political issues.
Most productive would be in the NS Creation forums I guess , after all they brought us Nancy v2 , countless custom maps/models/sprites/sounds , and nice stories to read before bedtime. The modelling forum used to be a bit flammy , but the FanFic forum could just have 1 post threads , since the feedback is trivial.
Also , the public beta discussion shapes the future NS3 release. Sadly , S&I is often looked down , as it's flooded with noob posts. But digging and reviving nice threads isn't that hard. What's harder is to make a 100% FAQ-compatible , interesting and balanceable feature suggestion. Now , only Dread and a few S&I regulars still bother making the effort.

PErsonaly? I think this is the best forum I have EVER seen, and honestly it realy is due to the mods.
however I do beleive that there is a definate downhill slide going on (one that is inavoidable with out payed admins).
Simply enugh the amount of crap that gets through in some of the threads would have not been tolerated before ;(
I periodicly go back to General and see just how scary it is sometimes. People flat out flaming each other, but not to the level that it would REQUIRE a mod to step in.
I have been part of/visited ALOT of other forums and have seen what hapens both with abusive admins and to lax admins (latest one I know about was a dumpshock where alot of people royaly **** off the normaly lezefaire admins and thus the 'off-topic' section got removed)

I'm gonna have to agree with most other peopel posting here and say these boards=amazingly good. Saying this as one who has been addicted to forums and such for as long as I've been on the net, I've seen all sorts of problems with net communities. Excessive flames, just plain idiotic people, complete and utter nazi mods, xenophobic communities, etc.....and frankly this community has none of those problems. Peopel are friendly, I could only think of 2-3 peopel who I would say are genuinely stupid who have not been banned or just went away (one of which is me), and we only have nazi mod (singular). Keep in mind this is all based on just teh Off-Topics. S&I, General, and Discussion are all a different story. But frankly, I don't care since I havn't been anywhere but OT since last summer, and even then I only went to Discussion (I have since tried to quit argueing over the internet completely, so it looks like I'll be staying here for a while).
But as for things getting worse lately, I don't think things have been getting worse lately so much as more noticeable. The stupid/flame posts aren't getting more numerous, just bigger and longer, taking up more space. Plus I've been posting more.
