Its funny how many people reworded and repeated my explanation of reloading.....
• GobyWanGobyWan Join Date: 2002-02-22 Member: 234Members
What about marine weapon upgrades? Do those happen in v1? Ammo, rof, damage etc?
• doctopepadoctopepa Join Date: 2002-01-26 Member: 99Members
I'd love to see realistic reloading (IE, you loose the bullets in the clip you toss). NOT, because it's realistic but cause it's tactical. Thoughts?
• FreemantleFreemantle Join Date: 2002-06-16 Member: 783Members
Nope. Not fun. Especially when trying to play a "fun" mod. I think it would be cool for clanmatch mode, but regular play.... eeeh.

The system on Firearms is realistic, if that's what you want. When you reload you take out a clip, and bullets left in that clip stay there (so the total count of clips only goes down when you completely empty one). I doubt real soldiers would just throw a clip away. The end result of this is that after a few minutes you load a clip that has, say, only 3 bullets in it. Luckily there's a 'merge magazines' command.

Just chucking the clips isn't really tactical - it just means that you waste a few rounds to empty the clip sometimes. It would put people at a disadvantage if they didn't use up the entire clip (because they'd be using more ammo than they had to).

Quoting GobyWans sig: If I wanted realism, I'd go outside and eat a plant.

Sometimes you need to sacrifice realism to get a better gameplay =) if marines would have all the trouble with the clips, then aliens should have to eat somthin to make all the weird organical weapons.......

In version 2.5 of FA, allways emptying your clip was especally important because the clips were chosen seemingly at random, and there was no command for merging clips. When I started playing firearms, you wouldn't believe how many times I died because I pulled up a clip with 5 bullets in it...

Now in 2.6, your smallest clip is acessed last, and you can merge clips. However, my habits from 2.5 live on, and I allways empty my current clip before loading a new one. Not only so that I don't end up with a short clip, that I have an accurate representation of my bullets remaining. In FA, if your ammo counter reads 30|4 That stands for number of bullets in loaded clip, number of remaing clips with some number of bullets. That means I could have anywhere from 150 bullets (30 x 5) to 34 bullets (30 + (1 x 4))!

Worring about hanging bullets and clips is uneededly complex for NS, and makes it rather hard to actually tell how much ammo you really have left.

Gota agree. Having clips instead of a pool woul be extremely tedius, not to mention very nerve racking!

PLus something that wouldn't add a thing to realism, and would hold up the release some.
• MCThornGristleMCThornGristle Join Date: 2002-06-06 Member: 733Members
Wouldn't add a thing to realism? Well, yes, it would... but it's not fun. Then again, "merging clips" isn't very realistic either - I imagine that takes quite a while irl to remove all of the bullets from one clip and put them manually into another.
• SurgeSurge asda4a3sklflkgh Join Date: 2002-07-14 Member: 944Members
Probably, but it looks easier than it seems. The bullets can be pulled right out.

As for realism... um... in Firearms, apparently you can keep count of how many bullets are in the clip, even on full auto... What kind of soldier is able to count every one of his shots in full-auto? I imagine they just discard the clip when they think they're down to around 1 or 2. But 1 or 2 shots are still effective.

And CStrike, a realistic mod, doesn't even have individual clip counting. It uses bullet amount.

CStrike, a realistic mod, doesn't take into account the effects of bladder pressure on firing accuracy either.

[sarcasm]Yea, while were at it, why don't we add more realism!

And the grenade launcher...

I don't think there is a high-res shotgun pic, as of yet.

Well it does hold 6 grenades.... and they're bigger than bullets....

It does look like an OICW... but then again, every gun looks like some other gun. Like the G11 looks like.... umm... I forgot. Well, the MA5B (From Halo) looks sorta like an OICW, too. Well, the first AR from Marathon does, too.

BathroomMonkey, the modeller that made the GL (formerly the HMG), has admitted that the design for it was inspired heavily by the OICW. Mostly in the double barrel and the casing, though...the rest of the gun doesn't really match up. Does anyone have a pic of the FAMAS? I'd like to compare them.

BathroomMonkey has an awesome explanation as to how he designs the models, in taking different modern guns, and cutting and pasting, and then using whatever comes out as a very rough sketch as to what will come. It gives a hint of something functional, but futuristic. After all, guns today still resemble guns from WWI in small ways. The LMG was inspired by some WWII side-clip firearms, too. He has an interview on rr.org that is well worth reading. I'll let him talk for himself.

-Ryan!
