Wheres the balance for tripmines?

Or, does anyone use tripmines?
I ask because I haven't heard anything about them in Tales from the Front Line (although I can't say I've read all of them, that thread is friggin huge). I had similar concerns about the pistol but was reassured by a PT (sorry, can't remember who) that it was indeed useful and widely utilized.
So whats with the tripmines? Do they get any use? Best way to use them? Are they useful enough to warrant their position in this game? Are they droppable (is that a word?) for marine to use or does commander use them?
That is all.

I don't know how the mines are distributed though.

(AFAIK)Tripmines are very usable and you can change the dynamics of the map pretty nicely with them. Best way to use them is ofcourse in narrow sections which marines don't use and where skulks and lerks can't go pass(over) them(ofcourse fades can). I think they use tripmines pretty much. Depending on how commander feels about them and ofcourse what kind of map they are playing. Commander gives it to marines and marines use them. In NS every weapon has its purpose.
Uh, scythe was faster, and seems he has whole different view than I
Well maybe devs or pt's tell us.
One question, can aliens set off trip mines in other ways than walking through the beam. For example: biting the mine, slashing it, spike attack, or xenocide. Also can, marines set them off in anyway? I hope not by walking through them, but I expect a grenade or a bullet would set them off.
and can marines walk thru them?
True, but this game is not trying to be realistic. It would be kind of boring if marines would be kicking alien @$$ all the time. Irl they should be able to put an end to every creatures misery with 5hmg bullets. And I mean it, 5 would be enough to kill or atleast criple an elephant, it should do bad stuff to lvl 5. Not to mention a single grenade with glauncher.
PT, screenshot plz
Marines can walk through/over trips/prox mines without setting them off, but if a trip is triggered, nearby marines (and marine buildings! *will* take damage!
Fades can blink through trip mines.
personally I was hoping that the mines would be exactly like the HL ones, because I was always super adept at planting tripmines in the most unsuspecting locations and scaring the hell out of the guy on the LAN. (Planting tripmines on the cieling around a corner so you barely scrape the beam and never see it)
Itd be nice if the marines map marked a mine explosion with a flashing icon or something, itd make sense too.
That way youd always know if your tripmines are gone even if your not within hearing distance and youd also know that there maybe incoming enemies to defend against.
Just a thought
To the best of my understanding, it becomes a trip mine if you place it on a side wall, where a red laser shoots across and anything non-marine walking through it sets it off.
Placed on the ground or ceiling, it becomes a prox mine- where anything non-marine that gets within so far of it sets it off.

Although, with their xenomorphic structure, who knows what kinds of shock-resistant/absorbing, regenerative capabilities they have? I mean, if a pencil-thick strand of spider silk will stop a jumbo-jet in midair, it's quite feasable some other, similar organic compound could be laced around/within their musculature.
