All you underground hip-hop junkies, post your favorite artists/songs. Please don't discuss any mainstream artists (ludacris, 50cent, eminem). Let's see how many NS'ers know what real hip hop is.
I've always liked underground stuff, it was always just hard for me to find. The only stuff I've found is by Binary Star, especially "Honest Expression"
underground = cool = good as opposed to mainstream = sucks because it's mainstream = bad.
I mean what's the big deal? People start to hate whatever group because they just got mentionned wherever or sold X amount of cd's too much for their liking?

you have to ask yourself:
does 50 cent suck? if you like him, i'm sorry.
didn't agree with that one? ok. does kelis suck? if you like her, i am not sorry.
a lot of mainstream sucks most hearitly, man... but some = not all. i've loved outkast since their first release, and they've just gotten better and better.
Hmm nope not really. I'm recently starting to listen to hip-hop/rap whatever. I don't care for the lyrics, but the beat gives me a good driving/racing feel. That's all.

hello, my name is aaarrrgh, I'm 20 years old, and I'm a hiphop addict.
I buy around 7-8 albums every month, and I honestly couldn't live without my music. As of late, I've been listening to Little Brother - The Listening. Their cd was released early last year, and strangely enough, it has not left my cd player since then. Their style is best described as a mixture of ATCQ and Pete Rock. They have this excellent early 90s sound, and I would recommend their music to everyone. Truly one of the hiphop groups that I find to be universally listenable.
Plus, I can only be happy for 9th wonder's succes (if you don't know what I'm talking about, it's really just another reason to get in touch with their music).
Other recent favorites include Lyrics Born, whose album, Later That Day, was one of the most funky things to come out last year, Danger Mouse & Gemini - Ghetto Pop Life, Diverse - One A.M., Hieroglyphics - Full Circle (Del and Souls of Mischief fans shouldn't sleep on this), soul position - 8 million stories, and LOADS of other albums.
I'm currently looking forward to hearing Kanye West's new album, College Dropout, the new cLOUDDEAD, Blockhead's debut album (the guy who produced most of Aesop Rock's Labor Days - see this), El-P's Jazz debut (!), the Murs / 9th Wonder collabo (it'll be hot as hell), and naturally, Gift Of Gab's Solo debut, 4th Dimensional rocketships going up. In fact, I can't wait for the last album.
To me, it honestly doesn't matter if one artist is popular or not. I love The Roots. I love OutKast. I love Talib Kweli, Common and Mos Def, even though they've all received loads of airplay. Hell, as I've mentioned, I also quite like Kanye West. He's a great producer (listen to Talib Kweli - Get By or Dilated Peoples - This way if you doubt that) and his smooth rapping often suits my mood. What does matter to me, however, is the motive. And I think that 50 cent is a prime example of this. If you listen to his old mixtape stuff, it's pretty evident that he has dumbed down GRODT. For better sales? Undoubtedly. And that's something I can't really respect. I'll go even further and say that this is what is wrong with hiphop. No, that's what's wrong with music in general.
Sadly, loads of artists (both underground and mainstream. Esoteric and Jedi Mind Tricks comes to my mind as well) haven't realised that it's not about making money. It's about the Music. And not a damn thing else.
EDIT: And right now I'm listening to The Strange Fruit Project. Great smooth jazzy hiphop. See this for their site, and peep this for a free and legal mp3 from one of their albums. There are several songs on their webpage worth getting.
Now thats What I call a real NS hip hop junkie. I looked through my old cds and found some Aceyalone CD's. Good stuff. I also want to check out that new Kayne West CD. Anyone recommend it? <3 Hip Hop </3 mainstream(most of the time).

was watchin an interview with kanye, where he said;
' go out, download my records. and if you really like them if you feel the music, then buy the album, and if you dont like it. well at least you will have heard my music. '
this is why i seem to 'respect' rap more then rock in this one.. rock is all money mwhadh, rap sees that it aint that easy if you know what i mean,...
and yeah i know kanye is good.. still is.. but his style changed.. put on his first album, then his last and tell me u dont hear a different 'style'

Blackstar, Jaylib, Kanye West (That picture on his newest album is funny), Danger Mouse and Jemini, Chino XL and Murs (I think the one who did Varsity Blues). Oh yea Immortal Techinique, that cat can spit some DEEP ****, especially "Dance with the devil".
I'm also a big fan of De La Soul, Camp Lo (even though you can't understand them sometimes) ATCQ and Pete Rock.
Is this rumor about ATCQ coming out with a new album true? Someone confirm this please.
BizZy | 9mm Messiah: They are. Look for the single ICU which has already been released.
In other news: I received Pete Rock: Lost & Found today. I've been on the lookout for this for some time, and only recently managed to track down a copy. It's a double disc featuring collaboes with him, a group called Ini, and a guy named Deda. While Deda isn't the most impressive rapper, InI certainly entertains beyond what's expected. Great smooth production, and the rap fits as well.
Ahh, so some people around here listen to Aesop Rock too.
Man, some of the stuff he raps about is just utterly unintelligible though. I can't understand it at all, but it just makes so much sense at the same time. I dunno, but it sounds great and all flows together, I forgot to add him in as another favorite of mine.

Yeah, his music is unorthodox at times, but when you actually read some of his lyrics, you seem to wonder where he gets his inspiration from. I especially like his single (i think its on Bazooka Tooth CD), Daylight.
