February 2, 2004 - Heavy Internet use may be therapeutic for those people facing social isolation and loneliness, says a University of Alberta study, dispelling the belief that high computer use leads to psychological problems.
A team of researchers, led by graduate student Mary Modayil, challenged the notion that heavy Internet use increases levels of depression for its users. The research was recently published in the journal Cyberpsychology and Behavior.
Modayil and her team, made up of Dr. Gus Thompson and Dr. Doug Wilson from Public Health Sciences and Dr. Stanley Varnhagen from the Faculty of Extension, tested the widespread belief and the results of previous studies that found being online for long periods results in greater social isolation.
"To me, anecdotal evidence suggested otherwise, which was a good reason to do the study," said Modayil.<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Heh. Don't get your hopes up though, I'm sure another study will be published next week that directly contradicts this one. :P

Well I suppose it depends on what your using your internet for. If your like me and you use it for PURE gaming, then it makes you a pimp.
Yeah DOOM, you hit it right on the head. I am on the internet all week (Sun-Thurs) only because there is nobody around here (southeastern Ohio) that is tech savvy nor can tell the difference between RAM and a sheep......
I live in a technological wasteland surrounded by cornfields....
My weekends howver, I spend little to NO time on the internet, I guess its because Im usually asleep all day, at my friends house or the bar, or hungover.....maybe all three...
If others don't like it, tough, eh?
Everyone has something upon which they spend a majority of their time on. Just go find out how much time an average adult spends starting at a tv box.

Agreed.
However, I also agree with the "study" Basically because I am in a similar situation to Burr, minus the bar hopping. I am in Limbo mode. I go to a college near my home, where most my friends have left, and are long gone. I find this to be a great resource for friends you will never meet. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->
If people do have psychological/isolation problems, the internet can be a good thing for them, but too much internet would definitally be a bad thing. My theory is, that if your on the internet too much, then you won't want to interact with anyone outside of it.
And then there's you, of course. <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif' /><!--endemo-->
