My random ramblings
Okay, this would probably only work for large tournaments spanning a couple days, but here it goes:
Essientally, its a battle for a star system. All the maps depict a certain part of the system, the first map being the middle planet (or outpost), the last being either the closest or the farthest from the star. However, it wouldn't be a straight play-through. I will explain through example.
Assume the star system has 6 planets, planet 1 being the closest to the star.
You play a map set on planet 3.
Marines win.
You play a map set on planet 4
Aliens win.
You play the map that was set on planet 3 again.
Essientally, its a push for control of the star system. Which actually makes sense:
Kharra start a tiny "colony" in the fringes of the system. The Marines, taking notice, go to eliminate them. They attack the Kharra, and either start to push them out of the system, or they lose, and the Kharra continue inward.
It could work for a major tournament in a LAN center, with a big chart on the wall showing who is forcing who where.

Battle for the galaxe or whatever regy is bugged!
the idea is good and if it was free is would be great fun.
Marik fool! I will enjoy reducing your mech to a smoldering hulk for the victory of Liao!

QUOTE

In other news, this weekend marks the opening weekend for the first beta Battle For the Galaxy tournament! This is some cool stuff:
Battle for the Galaxy is a tournament for the Natural Selection mod taken to an Epic Level. Instead of fighting independently or with a small clan-sized group, participants enlist in a massive force of Marines or Aliens composed of hundreds of players. Each player enlisted only fights on one side (alien or marine) called a "force" for the duration of the campaign, so the destiny of every player in that force rests not only on their own skill, but on the teamwork and commitment of their teammates. Individual battles take place over 12 hour marathon clashes, across multiple servers, during which hundreds of combatants enter the fray and struggle alongside their comrades for as long as they choose. When the battle is over and the smoke clears, the results from all the servers are compiled and the victors secure the region the battle represents.
The tournament incorporates a realistic command structure with Commanding Officers and Alien Leaders. By demonstrating your skill and ability to assist in a team effort, you raise yourself above your peers and become a candidate for being promoted to a leadership position: setting the stage for your climb into the ranks of the upper echelons.

Well, sure. And CAL is just pubs except with a smaller player base. And NS is just TFC except the classes look different and have different abilities. And Half Life is just like Doom except you can look up and down. And Jak & Daxter 2 is just Super Mario Bros with walking in/out of the screen. And <insert thing 1 here> is just <insert thing 2 here> with <insert small-sounding change which while strictly true doesn't say half of what's the actual case and makes the whole thing sound far less different than it actually is>.
I mean, what exactly were you expecting? Flamethrowers? A third race? Vehicles? Of *course* it's just regular NS with stats tracking used in an interesting way. There isn't really much more anyone could do to make for an interesting open-to-public thing. At least they have some nifty custom maps. (Although the marines on so far have decided we hate ns_rampage with a vengence, even if it is pretty well-made.)
I was addressing Tekdude who seemed to think the maps in the tournament would be of a different style to anything before (matching the assault modes of other mods), as for the tournament, fine, it has a different way of displaying stats for the games, it's still not particularly interesting or original, nor do the stats particularly mean anything except that the balance of the game is off towards <insert team>.
Maybe it was just me imagining things, or we were talking about a whole universe where you can go battle from planet to planet and go in comand and ask to be phased on a certain map and such
Now THAT would be amazingly amazing if it turns out well

Woah, simulated reality... Too matrix-ish for me, I might start actually feeling the pain as well. Honestly though, NS on that sort of scale would be very addictive...
Oh and The BftG thing is currently a free beta, with the real one coming soon after. The real one is the one ya have to pay for. Even if it is only stat tracking, you really can't take it much further than that thanks to the HL Engine, and the/a same/similar player restriction will probably reappear in future Valve games methinks...

It tracks a lot more than just that... individual player rankings, specialisation toward certain weapons, kill/death ratios... Nothing special, admittedly, but still far more post-game feedback than you'd normally get in a pub.
The maps, for the record, are all custom ones, which is a blessing or a curse depending on how you look at it.
If you just treat it as a fun little diversion from the usual NS scene, it's all good.
By the way, my original reply was meant to be more witty than flaming, so if you took any offence, I completely apologise. Kaneda's bike pwns, hmm we're diverting, yes it'll be a great idea, can we have house Marik and Steiner? Liao were crap, they only ever had a small wedge of the galaxy
Purple > all. I never knew was BattleTech was until a mate got me into MPBT 3025, and it was the win!
Hmm... I seem to remember there's a Half-Life RPG-style Mod, where each game world was on a different server, and some behind-the-scenes trickery meant that, for example, you would keep your stats and items after logging off, when changing worlds etc.
I guess this *could* be done similar... If Flayra didn't mind completely re-writing NS and setting up specific servers to deal with each map, of course.
