Looking For Some 1.04 Action

Sorry if this is in the wrong area
I don't mean to say NS 3 is bad, it's awesome, but I'm just really missing 1.04. If anyone can start a listen server or knows a dedicated one still in exsistence (because ASE and Steam turned up nuthin'), we might be able to get a 1.04 game started.

P.S. If this is the wrong place to post, I'm sorry, but I couldn't find one in organized play.

There was a server set up in December for 1.04, but it was only for one day.

I would also like some more 1.04 action.

What was so special about 1.04?
I'Ve been playing ns on/off since day 1 and I can't remember anything special about 1.04 (it was the last version before 2.0)...

Well.. the evolution tree being limited per hive (fade at 2, onos at 3) the gorge resource diversion... the differnt lerk flight path, the hive lockdowns.. Fade with acid rocket earlier, onos with primal scream, lerk with spike and bite... umbra not shooting.. charge pwning all..

    Not to mention paralysis

The thing I miss most about 1.04 was Fade blink. Sure, you get stuck a lot, but most servers had unstuck anyway. I just bound it to v, eventually.

Well, after getting NS from dlx.gamespot.com, and the 1.04 server patch from redphive.org, I took this screenie alone in the Eclipse Marine Start (the OLD one)

The good ol' days. I remember going from 1.04 to 1.1 beta test, it was like. Wow.

Didn't anyone think that 1.1 (2.0) wasn't going to make it that far? I mean, it's nice and all, but no one liked 1.04 better?

When I checked All-Seeing Eye, there were 2 WON 1.04 servers. They were both empty, foriegn (though one was British), and password protected

I started playing NS way back during 1.xx and i always enjoyed how dramatic and long the games were. After 2.0 it just seamed like every game was over in 15 minutes. Does anyone else rember those epic 2 hour games where your palms were all sweaty and you had to take a break after that last crunchy marine fell?

Anyway i haven't played in a while and I just got the 3.2 beta and i sure do hope they made the game a little longer. 15 minutes is fine for combat but i want a real CHALLENGING MATCH!

Count me in if you get a server running 1.04 or 1.xx.

1.04, JPs being a virtually unstoppable tech when combined with HMG or GL. Only having to hold a small area of the map for a few minutes. Play combat for god's sake it's the exact same thing!

Ahhh ns_eclipse, the first map I played on NS. Count me in for some ol' fashioned NS.

You guys are dedicated to putting one up, but it cost other people money and time to do so.

if you wanna contribute we can do something.

But 1.04 takes alot of server resources, and can kill servers.

    One Dedicated would be needed

I miss the 1.02 and 1.03 versions. Where you could use the stopcommander exploit to turn yourself from an alien to a marine on the aliens team. You could use marine weapons, so you could LMG or knife that marine who didn't follow orders before the next round. You could also pick up marine weapons and have some fun, I remember I welded a HA to death when he looked at me like he wanted me to weld him. Also, you moved as fast as a skulk and when you picked upgrades like adrenaline and carapace, you received heavy armor values and weapon upgrades. Then when you got a sensory chamber upgrade, you had a vertical flying only jetpack. There was also the jointeamtwo exploit, in 1.0 when you left and came back your resources would be "pooled" back into the aliens. So when you goto the readyroom and back onto the aliens, you started off with full resources again. So you bind a key to readyroom; jointeamtwo and let it go. Imagine seeing a "wall-of-lame" in the first 1 minute of game and 3 hive's in 5 minutes. lol, the look on the marines faces were classic. Good ol' 1.0!

    oh..that pics brings back memories.

Its simple for me. I like the latest NS versions. But it might be fun to do 1.04 again for once. But not dedicated. I tend to stick with current releases, the good and bad.

So, do you mean to say that a few simple bug fixes could have made the game a great game, rather than a whole new version?
  • MintmanMintman Join Date: 2003-05-30 Member: 16866Members
Those "few" bug fixes constituted 2.0

There were many more bugs fixed than he mentioned. Most, if not all, the large exploits within the game were prevented. As well as some much needed balance changes (JP nerf, flashlight building and reloading).
  • Crono5Crono5 Join Date: 2003-07-22 Member: 18357Members
I never really got how JPs were such a problem. They pretty much couldn't come faster than the Gorge could build a second hive, thus webs and Acid Rocket (which actually hurt). I was messing around in Eclipse with sv_cheats on, and I webbed up some places for the hell of it, went Marines, JPed around, and accidentaly got stuck on some webs that I knew about. I think it's pretty balanced. Plus, I like the flashlight armory exploit Hopefully some pics and talk will get someone who owns a server's 1.04 juices flowing, because I'm totally broke

P.S. i'm lost, I never knew about that stopcommander glitch... Interesting...

    Remember battles for Processing?
  • MintmanMintman Join Date: 2003-05-30 Member: 16866Members
They pretty much always came before the second hive was up actually. All you needed was 3 nodes and you'd have people flying into their hive with HMGs about 30 seconds after it had been put up. Never mind become active. This was in clan matches aswell, so it wasn't down to shoddy aliens.
  • im_lostim_lost TWG Rule Guru Join Date: 2003-04-26 Member: 15861Members
2.0 was more than bug fixes. It was also a change in the entire alien resource economy, as well as a change in the cost of nearly everything (I think the only thing that didn't change in price was alien upgrades). Honestly, I think that 1.04 + bug fixes + appropriate jp tweaks (removing fps dependence) = balanced enough for fun pub play, at least more fun than any of the updates.

If you let them get 3 nodes and don't put up a hive almost after you get some nodes, then your team is bound to loose anyway. And the webs'd still work.
Don't forget the Marine team has to

Build an IP or 2

Build an Armory

Fend off Skulk rush

Upgrade Armory

Build 3 RTs

Build Arms Lab

Build Proto Lab

Upgrade Proto Lab

And the Marines have to do this keeping all 3 RTs with no electricity, and living with no base defense.

Don't forget that everything in 1.04 is wildly 'spensive

While I do miss leap and charge as weapons, I can't say that I'm terribly sad to see 1.0jp/hmg go.
