When Walking On Growth

When walking on alien growth, it sounds like metal, have another sound (making a total of FOUR!!! WOW!!!) for infestation textures.

This dosen't go in the suggestion forum I guess, because one who is good with the materails text could whip it up real quick.

    We mappers do maps, not sounds.

    Lies, many mappers also do sprites, texture work, skys, modles, and sounds. If they can do all that, I'm sure someone could do a "natural" sound.

    If you look at the materials.txt you see a few useless sounds such as: snow (no maps have snow you can walk on) computer (what would it sound like?) wood (I have not see one side of any brush in NS have anything resembling a wood texture on it) and tile (which has that waxed floor sound; which sounds cool, but no maps IIRC have it)

    Regardless, this is <i>mapping</i> forum, for <i>maps</i>, not sounds.

    Ok, i'm going to submit this to Flayra. I've ammended the materials.txt to incorporate the infestation textures. This only, however, incorporates the textures with heavy infestation, the other textures will still sound like metal / concrete respecitvely. I threw on the "dirt" sounds to the infestation, since it seemed to be the most fitting out of the selection.

    The file goes into your ..\ns\sounds\ directory, copy it over the existing one. None of the existing textures were changed at all, and i have tested this and it works fine.

    *EDIT: Also, this cannot be map specific, it is general settings for the mod itself, meaning if you ammend it with any of your own textures, you'll have to distribute your own materials.txt also, or give directions as to how to ammend it with your custom textures. And finally, no, this is not the job of a mapper, i only did it so wRaven would shut the hell up.

    wRaven, not everything to do with mapping is the mappers job. Some of it is for modellers, texture artists, sprite artists and the like, just because a lot of us do our own texture or modelling work does NOT mean that they are the rightful jobs of the mapper. Now please kindly remove your head from your arse.

    Did I say ALL mappers did everything? No, I said a lot do. Mappers are the ones who also usually make materails text, or at least help with it, hence, the mapping forum.

    Jesus H Christ..... *sigh* You really don't get it do you? We are <b>mappers</b>... we <b>map</b>. We are not texture artists, nor are we sprite artists, nor are we sound creators. No. We are <b>mappers</b>. We make <b>maps</b>. Yes. Maps. That is spelt <b>M-A-P-S</b>, which you may notice is significantly different to <b>M-A-T-E-R-I-A-L-S-.-T-X-T E-D-I-T-O-R-S</b>. We make maps? Do you understant that?

    Technically the materials.txt is to be ammended by the <b>CREATOR OF THE TEXTURES OR WADS</b>, which you may also note that is not spelt <b>M-A-P-P-E-R-S</b>

    Sorry, your facny city talk is confusin' to my bumkin ears.

    <!--QuoteBegin--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->
    <b>a lot of us</b> do our own texture or modelling work does NOT mean that they are the rightful jobs of the mapper
    <!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->

    Here, you say a lot of mappers do their own texture work

    <!--QuoteBegin--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->We are not texture artists<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->

    Here, you say no one does texture work

    <!--QuoteBegin--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->We are mappers<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->

    Here you say you map, which of is course, obvious. I am alive! I have skin! Both are true, but have little to do with this conversation.

    <!--QuoteBegin--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->That is spelt M-A-P-S, which you may notice is significantly different to M-A-T-E-R-I-A-L-S-.-T-X-T E-D-I-T-O-R-S.<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->

    Here, you skillfully point out that maps, and a text document are different. That is true, but that does not mean they are not related. Like you said, a lot of you do textures, models, and other little things. While these also aren't releated to mapping, you do them anyway.

    <!--QuoteBegin--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->Technically the materials.txt is to be ammended by the CREATOR OF THE TEXTURES OR WADS, which you may also note that is not spelt M-A-P-P-E-R-S <!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->

    True. That is 100% correct. However, as you said, many mappers do textures. Ergo a mapper would be able to edit the .txt because they created the wad.

    <!--QuoteBegin--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->I've ammended the materials.txt to incorporate the infestation textures<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->

    Great! No more walking over a green mass of alien bacteria and growth only to hear the metal that is no longer there.

    I'd rather not argue with you, I do think you are a skilled mapper.

    Let me once again explain this in words that are easy to understand.

    Requests for sound or texture changes do not belong in the mapping forum, regardless of the habits of some mappers.

    Because the materials.txt is a general mod-wide settting it falls upon Flayra to make these changes, not us. If I submit my own materials.txt then it will NOT WORK if someone else does the same for their map, they'll end up overwriting and making a mess of it.

    So don't tell me to make my infestation sound organic, tell Flayra.
