to make a map with a new editor!
And that editor is....

notepad!!!!

}

That is an object in a .map file

My challenge is to make a HLDM map using only notepad (or any plain text editor), post it here and see who makes the best map!!!

BTW, the .map format supports comenting C++ Style
so you can do a
//First wall north east ect...[/COLOR]

    It sounds crazy, but when Quake first came out that was the only way to make maps - and people still made them. If you're interested, the complete map file format is available here. A quick summary: the three points (x, y, z) are not vertices, but merely points on a plane. The "tex alignment" bits consist of texture axis and offsets followed by rotating and u/v scaling.

    The ability to modify maps in a text editor can be quite useful - this map was saved by using notepad where Hammer simply wouldn't open it.

    Yes, but the early quake maps, before editors were, well, crap.

    Yea, and the map format also works that way too. It's a bit more compilcated, but it works.

    Both formats will compile into HL but make sure if you use the 1st 1 that you dont put the parameter mapversion "220" in it

    Good luck Fluffy. The only problem I think you will find is lighting Would be nice to see you do this. Even if its DM and not NS. Proves something to the NS Community. Maybe in the future a compiler which converts to a .txt could be made for the total conversion of a lost map. Then load that up in VHE and we would have the same map. Sounds like a neat, but unlikely idea. New perspective on things though.

    surely that would be a de-compiler?

    Could quite possibly be why it decompiles so accurately.

    Aka a HLDM map

    Use graph paper and write down locations of verticies as you draw, then type it out in notepad.

    Is there some way to convert our .rmf or .maps to .txt for viewing this way? I'd be interested to see what my map looks like in such a simple format

    yea. To convert the rmf's, open up hammer and save as .map then take away the .map and put .txt instead.

    Or, you could just skip the renaming (have to add the toung smiley now ) and open up the .map in notepad instead.
