Lots Of Computer Problems

<div class="IPBDescription">Help a brudda out</div> Ok I'll list all my problems, and people can post some suggestions/fixes for me.

Recently just got a new PC, so I did a fresh install of Windows XP + SP1. Did all the major automatic updates (IE I don't need no **** MSBlast.exe on my computer again)

1.) I installed Norton Internet Security + Antivirus. Everytime I go to run Liveupdate the window closes.... the process (Not the program) is still running in the taskmanager though. On top of this small windows such as running msconfig.exe close after a few seconds as well. Same thing as Liveupdate...
It's either:
A.) Windows being stupid
B.) Virus.... crap...

2.) Internet cookies don't seem to work.. so I have to relogin to every board I want to visit everytime I go there. On top of that, you know where you start typing an URL into the address bar, and down pops a menu with all the sites beginning with the letters you just typed in? (Pretty much an address bar history)
Yeah. I don't get that anymore. I'd like it back... Pain in the arse typing the NS.org forum url in everytime.

3.) Nothing. There is no third thing. (Those who get the reference get a cewkie and a chair to sit in)

4.) Recommend me some additional security on top of Norton Internet Security and Antivirus please. People who suggest ZoneAlarm die. I'm thinking along the lines of spam/adware/etc... I want control of what happens to my PC from now on.

LiveUpdate just sounds like a borked installation. I'd just try a full reinstallation.

For the internet cookies, you need to go into your internet options control panel (assuming you are using internet explorer) and choose the privacy tab. This is where you can control cookie settings. Its probably set too high. You can use the slider to lower the security, or manually add "good" sites.

For spyware, get Spybot Search and Destroy. Great program, better than Adaware.

I rather like both Adaware and Spybot - use them in conjunction for the best results. They will pick up things that the other misses, most of the time. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    Give <a href='http://housecall.antivirus.com/' target='_blank'>http://housecall.antivirus.com/</a> a try, works excellent.

I didn't expect the Spanish Inquisition in this thread...

Yeah the live update thing closing itself sounds ugly, I'd probably re-install over that. For security, I suggest investing in a Linksys router. These babies are awsome and very secure. I don't run any anti-virus software and as long as you don't go opening dumb emails (or use Outlook for that matter -><a href='http://www.mozilla.org/products/thunderbird/' target='_blank'>Thunderbird</a>) you shouldn't have any problems. Also don't use IE for browsing if you want to cut spyware in at least half (<a href='http://www.mozilla.org/products/firebird/' target='_blank'>Firebird</a> or <a href='http://www.opera.com/' target='_blank'>Opera</a> or whatever). With this simple setup I don't have any problems.

Yeah I managed to pick up 2...

    WORM_AGOBOT.A3
    BKDR_JEEMP.C

Look up the definitions. Stops anti-virus software...
New computer is up a week... 2 viruses.

    God bless the internet.

Think I'll turn off my PC and sort this crap out tomorrow...

If you can, download as many updates as you can beforehand, burn them to a couple blank cds, do a full reformat and reinstallation of windows, and patch as much as you can with the cds before you even plug in a cable to the internet. Thats gonna be your best bet if nothing else works.

    I suggest you ditch norton's internet security and get <a href='http://www.tinysoftware.com/home/tiny2?s=6321793357280250765A0&offer=standard&pg=tpf5_home' target='_blank'>Tiny Personal Firewall</a>.

It's a great non-resource-hungry firewall app. Every time a new program wants to access the 'net, you must allow it and add it to it's database, three clicks total.

With this, NAV2003 updated and all the windows security updates I've <b>never</b> had a virus. <b>EVER</b>.

Keep in mind, I don't run <i>any</i> anti-virus software or <i>any</i> software firewalls and I've <i>never</i> gotten a virus. I use non MS browser and email which helps a whole bunch.

I should mention that I use Outlook Express and IE.

If you don't use anti-virus software how do you know you've never gotten a virus?

    1. Liveupdate is an automatic upgrade utility that slowly downloads patches over time. Just leave norton on with liveupdate activated and it will update itself. Of course, if you want a virus scanner that actually works, go to housecall and make sure you are virusfree.

    2. Tools, internet options. Look. I seem to remeber that the default internet cookie security setting is on "accept no cookies", so you may want to change it. Go to tools, privacy, and set the slider to "low". As for the history, I'd look around the internet options.

If you're looking for a free solution for AV and Firewall, I recommend:

    Firewall: <a href='http://www.zonealarm.com' target='_blank'>ZoneAlarm</a>
    Anti-Virus: <a href='http://www.grisoft.com' target='_blank'>AVG Anti-Virus</a>

For those just getting a new install going, you can hop into the 'network connections' area (it's in the control panel) then right-click on your connection (which is NOT connected yet) and choose 'properties'. In the 'Advanced' tab, there's a checkbox for 'Internet connection firewall'.

Check the box, hit OK. NOW connect, and you should be safe enough to at least patch the machine fully and download ZoneAlarm. Hey, at least it's better than Norton... but then, being skinned alive with a SPORK is better than Norton. As is having a retarded monkey chew your foot off. Or being eaten by gerbils.

I wouldn't go near zonealarm if you paid me. One time at a lan it wouldn't let me connect for some reason. I uninstalled and it locked all network traffic on it's way out. I couldn't do squat. When I reinstalled it it started working again.

That's more because you didn't bother configuring it, or telling it to REMOVE the firewalling rules it set in place before uninstalling. If you can deal with about two or three minutes (tops) for a basic config, then you'd have no problems with it.

More a PEBKAC error, really. Which you'd know if you bothered to read the manual, or at least the help files.

Zonealarm did have a habit in the past of leaving its TrueVector service running if you attempted to stop it. I have had problems at LANs before trying to get stuff through it. But then I have problems with my network every time I go to a LAN. I don't do networks.

I had had zonealarm running for a couple of months before I went. I had it set up properly as far as I knew. It's marketed as an easy-to-use program so people shouldn't have to wade though masses of poorly written documentation to get it humming. I had tried disabling it but it still wouldn't work.

Go to services. Check that TrueVector is really stopped.
