I'm New, And Need A Helping Hand Of Sorts

How to beat aliens?
I like to play in a little 3 player server, its normally me and my brother vs someone (who knows how to play the game) as alien, and we get owned every time.

So my question is, how do you stop cloaked turret farms and Onos when there's only one marine attacking?

    erm....you dont?
rines are generally fked with anything close to 2v1 anyways.
could try a shotgun rush though, both you and ya mate

Marines are at a disadvantage in smaller games. However, that does not mean they cannot win, especially if the player count is in their favor. To win, they must play very offensively. This is also true in larger games, but in larger games it is not as necessary. Fortifying positions wastes resources that could be better spent on tech or nodes. Put pressure on the aliens, so that they will be too busy to attack your assets. Prevent them from advancing too far in tech, as you will be unable to defeat advanced alien tech with so few players. Also, if you are fighting a single alien, you should have free reign over the map in the first few minutes of the game, because the lone alien is most likely to be a Gorge during this time. Use this to your advantage. I could go on and on, but basically, in a small game, you should tech as fast as possible while attempting to disrupt the enemy's teching.

Well, NS wasn't really designed to be played with just three people, on a LAN. Why don't you guys play online? The fact that you're all in the same house together means you can get some great teamwork going.

Ns classic was designed for games of 8 people, to a max of about 16 people.
I think if you'd cross either lines, the balance wouldn't work.

Ns combat, on the other hand can be played 1v1.
    but i'd recommend more.
No more than 16 either btw.

    Thanks for the reply guys!
I guess you're right, however its finding the community - we arn't in the same house! We're only playing that few people because we're all from the same channel in IRC as it were, and are trying to play together. All we need is more players then

    Grenade launcher.

Double damaga to structures and Onos are easy to hit with grenades. If you can't hit the broad side of an Onos with a grenade, then you need to practise landing those grenades right on target.

The grenade launcher is certainly effective against structures and large groups of aliens, but against lone aliens, assuming the damage values have not changed from 2.01, it is less damaging than even the LMG.

just to add as well - your alien friends just have to wait until you've shot your 4th grenade and pounce on you; reload is a **** - you better be good with the pistol

    ...or knife.

Nah. Play on larger games. If you *MUST* play on smaller games, relocating is a MUST. Either take a hive, or hide somewhere. Then establish pg network; need them for your rines to get around quickly. You will not be able to hold res towers long enough for Proto, so just get those weapon upgrades done and try to prevent hive 2 from goign up.

Take res towers early on, and begin to elec when you have about 3 or 4. Distant RTs should have a PG too, but IMO a tf is not necessary.

Take choke points around key areas, (esp double res) and establish siege outposts at unused hives. Dont foget to get an obs up.

MT with 2 players is not worh the investment. Make sure they are using Voice comm, then just scanner sweep and observe as comm when necessary. If there is one alien, it is unlikely you will meet it. If you don't want that rine to die when building, there is always med spam.

As long as it fires hand grenades instead of regular grenades, it's more powerful for now in 3.0 beta 2.

If you need some players to fill in the slots, try some bots. RCBot is probably the best for marines, it has a couple of bugs in the latest version and doesn't fully support combat, but it's not too bad. WhichBot is an aliens only bot, and they really are outstanding. The skulks are about as good as most players I've seen, and not just through having good aim. They're still good at higher lifeforms too (though fades can't blink currently). For WhichBot, I suggest downloading the latest version from the forums (the only ones posted on the homepage are the full versions, not the WIPs). Latest is currently 0.9h. Hope this helps.
