I usualy micro manage everything, up to sometimes the postion they stand in when taking out stuff. but that rare. (like if theres a wall of lame I drop a TF infront of em, and sometimes the reens will run past the TF and get killed instead. )

anyways, I will usualy give diffrent players diffrent roles as well. but I try to give em ones they like.

If I notice 3 certain players tend to stick together all the time, well, they I try not to seperate em. If someone is a decent rambo, I drop him a shoty and he will be my rez hore who goes around getting me all the other rezs will the rest of the team acts more like a discration.

As I learn more about individuals and there play style, I put them in roles they best shine. Some people are great base defenders, and thats all they like to do. So instead of buy 2-3 turrets, I use him instead.

Communication and field based decision making are often keys to victory. The commander is only one man, and may be busy, it is up to his marines to take his orders and make appropiate field decisions, and give the commander feedback as to the reasons and results of their field decisions, if they either complimented or contradicted the order, the results may be positive. The flow of information and individual people, even small things like a marine reloading, can significantly change the flow of a battle.

The commander is not a god, he cannot see all and know all and do all at the same time. He needs to rely on his team for reliable feedback, and be able to stay flexable. He also needs to understand the situation of the team (a team that's 1/2 - 3/4ths dead can hardly phase to a location that a fade is slaughtering.)

The faster the commander can process and put information together in order to give his team a clear picture of his plan: what, how, and why the generally better they become.

Remeber, information and flexability are as important as teamwork and skill in NS.

The issue in this case isn't as much the idea of you going rambo, its the fact you did during a key moment during an important build in an attempt to take a hive.

Its the same affect as attacking a res tower when a hive is empty and trying to build a tf or phase gate. You alert the enemy, and in something as important as a hive, its risky enough without you taking chances.

gecko i love your idea of giving the rines their roles. im sure that this adds a lot of extra fun to the game. I think the most important job of the commander isn´t to win. its to make the game fun for everyone.

(ok there are people who can´t have fun without winning. And sometimes im like this too)

Actually, as a comm I'm really good at keeping everything straight. I know where all alien RTs are, all marines are, which ones need health (do this by spamming space every time you hear a 'marine is under attack') and generally where the aliens are, based on MT or, if I don't have it, listening and paying attention to which of my RTs are being attacked.

So, if you're in a vital phase gate location and you hear an egg, chances are that I know about it to. Furthermore, I probably know, based on how long it's been gestating, it it's an upgrade or if it's a new lifeform. Therefore, if you're ever a marine under me and you hear an egg, wait for me to give you an order to kill it. If I don't, let me know that it's there, and wait for me to tell you that I know, and that I want you to build the PG.

Micromanagement and such is where the commander's true RTS skills are given a chance to shine. Amiability, and a friendly personality go a long way towards getting some people to do as you say. Of course there will be those that ignore you totally, its up to you to find some way to reach them.

Gecko's idea of giving them roles is a great way of approaching this psychologically, as the marine will feel the need to follow orders and do better for the commander's sake. After all, these are all people, even if some of them are complete smacktards, they are here to play a game with other people so they can't really reason away ignoring you the entire round.

I'm not in a clan so I'm only commanding in public games, which is a huge random factor. Sometimes all the new players join my team, sometimes players who dont take orders and sometimes you get an ****-spank team in your hands.
I'm always trying to inform my team on where i hear gorges, fades, eggs, where main hive is, etc. but sometimes when the marines aren't good enough
(aim like sissy schoolgirls), refuse to move out of base, armory hump, whining, spamming voice comm for upgrades/weapons, I tend to get a little sore, which often ends in yelling. I need to work on my performance...

I had those to much lately.

It ends my irritated leave to comm chair with the words YOU do it.

Then I simply wait till the comm find out what a waypoint is, lauthing at all the kills I see in console.

serious, n00bs are hell lately. kharaa aswell. I say this wasn't a isue in 1.04 with the hive 1 33, hive 2 66, hive 3 100 res. can't we atleast implement SOMETHING like this again so gorges don't starve while the n00b team only onos saves.

Since I have a lack of selfconfidence most of the time, I let the other marines
decide what is going to happen and think of strategies, and mostly the marines find that very nice. I mostly just give em what they want ^^, works pretty fine, though very depending on the type of people: If they're are serious, know the game good enough, react well to that current situation. It encourages teamplay too I think...
