Crouching, buildings, level2s, etc.
Hiya. This is my first post on the NS forums .(i know, i read the thing about how you are supposed to get introduction post out of the way in the off-topic forum. I guess im just a rebel like that. hope this single sentance doesn't cause any heart attcks.)

Random list of things:

crouching/crawling/jumping/size: This probly sounds like an idiodic question, but can marines jump(without the jetpack)/lay down/crouch? How does the size affect the different routes the aliens can take? Are level 1s the only units that can take smaller passages?

What buildings can be built? What are their uses?(i am as suprised as you all probly are that i didnt see that anywhere

What is in it for the level 2s?(i read about old level 2 rushes from ealier betas and i assume the unbalance has been fixed.) I am not saying that it sounds like an unimportant class. It just seems like a selfless one (selflessness not being a common attribute of the FPS gamer). Do they get kill points for building buildings?
Are they effective fighters(i would assume not because then the other levels would be obsolete on defence)?

Lastly, if I took anyone's avatar let me know, and I will change mine.

PS: You all know that penny-arcade.com(a popular gaming news/reviews site) has mentioned NS multiple times, right?

a search of our forums would answer all these questions

including that we know penny arcade has mentioned us at least twice recently

Marines can jump, just about anything but a level 5 alien can fit in the smaller spaces, but the level 2 and 1 don't need to crouch. Also the entrances normally require some in-game aid to reach (ex. wallclimbing)

many buildings, and I should be working right now so I'll just leave you to search the forums on this one

level 2 gets kill points for buildings last I checked, they also get rps at 3 times the normal rate. They are not very good fighters, but can place turrets which are quite effective I understand. They also have a dual use bacterial spray that will harm enemies while healing teammates.

On the part of selflessness possibly ruining the game. The aliens are designed for deathmatchy play while marines are made for tight teamwork. To this end, marines do not get a kill count.

and we have seen many a rebel, many of us are, heart attacks will not come, but the swift hand of a moderator will should you get out of line, and this is a general topic about NS, it's in the right place.

Marines can jump/slash crouch. No laying down though. Lvl1s(Skulks) are the only ones that can take Alien only passages, which are just high/smaller vents.

There are a ton of buildings, check teh Ready Room. Someinfo in there. Lvl2s are the only builders for the alien side. They do not get points by building buildings, they lose resources though. They're not really fighters, but I'm guessing they can do something in deffense.

    Yep, we love/hate Tycho.

Note: Welcome to the forums Messenjah, we are the nicest community out there so make yourself at home.

Gwahir, only one of those questions could really be answered by a search, as most of those questions haven't been asked in a while (like prone-ness, and the like).

Welcome to the forums, be nice and we'll love you.

Marines cant laydown but they can jump and crouch.
The lvl1, lvl2 and lvl3 are all about the same size as a crouching marine or lvl4. This means they can all access vents but the lvl1 is more adept at vent navigation because it can climb walls and its fast. The marines (and lvl4's to a certain extent)are far slower in vents so they tend to stay out of them.

The lvl2 is supposed to be very fun to play. They dont have to kill loads of people to have a good time, scores arent everything.

Lots of people share avatars. Doesnt matter. If you want a customised one visit the official sig post in the artwork forum.

    Sorry JediYoshi, you LOSE

The Skulk and Lerk can get in the hard to reach vents, where a skulk can wallclimb to and a flier can well...fly into! If there are any crouch size vents on the ground, a marine, or level 1,2,3 or 4 can fit in.

OK, I'll field some of these, even though someone else is probably typing a response too as I type.

The marines can jump, and when they crouch they are the same size as a skulk (Level 1). Theoretically Marines can go everywhere a Skulk can once they have jetpacks but marines move much slower when crouching than skulks do. So a marine caught with his/her metaphorical pants down in a vent is most likely a snack-ina-tube.

Woah there tiger, that's a big question. To my knowledge for the aliens:
Defence chamber: Heals nearby aliens and allows for armour upgrades for aliens. May shoot spikes, I'm not sure.
Sensory Chamber: Adds all marines in Line Of Sight (LOS) to the hive mind and allows sensory upgrades like Scent of fear and advanced hivemind.

There are a lot more alien buildings that I'm too tired to remember.

    For the marines:

Command Console: Allows a marine to enter the commander view. One is pre-built when the game starts and the commander can place more of them in auxiliary bases.

Turret: Basic, standard run-of-the-mill automated defence, shoots lead. Targets aliens and alien buildings.

Siege turret: A sonic based weapon that can shoot through walls. Has a limited range and does not target aliens, only their buildings. Has a large splash damage radius.

Armoury: Refills marine's ammo for free and allows weapon upgrades to be performed (I think).

Sensor Tower: Adds all moving aliens within it's range to the marine's motion tracking view. Similar to the alien's hive sight but much more limited. You can't tell if that blue circle is an angry angry Onos or a cute 'lil Skulk.

Observation thingamabob: Allows motion tracking upgrades and probably something else.

Infantry portal: Allows marines to spawn, think gloom.

Phase gate: The commander places two of these and they act like a nydus canal like the zerg in StarCraft.

There are a butload of other buildings that haven't been talked about and that I've forgotten.

As for the level 2s, They are the backbone of the alien team. I'm not sure how the scoring system works for the aliens but I'm sure there's an incentive to build stuff. Gorges are the only class that can start a hive growing so they are essential for the aliens if they want to get the higher-level abilities and classes. They can also heal teammates with healing goo and they can place webs to ensnare unwary marines. They also get three times as much resources as any other class.

    I don't think anyone's using that avatar.

    Yes.

I know as soon as I hit "Add Reply" I'm going to be taken to a thread with about 400 other, more accurate replies already there. But meh, what'cha gonna do.

even if they haven't been asked in a while, you could find a great deal on the buildings, crouching etc. maybe not, but a lot can be found in the forum if you set it to the proper beginning date.

I thought that I read somewhere that the scoreboard was removed to encourage teamplay, and not worry about who has the most points. Im I wrong or dead wrong?
  • ScytheScythe Join Date: 2002-01-25 Member: 46NS1 Playtester, Forum Moderators, Constellation, Reinforced - Silver
Both teams have a scoreboard but the marine's scores are blanked out. I presume the ordering doesn't change depending on the hidden score.

However the aliens are very score oriented.

Thanks for the clarification, but when you say the aleins are very score oriented you mean b/c of resouses not because of frags..... right?(I know they are psuedo-related)

well the basic idea was to beable to atract rambo DMers and team ppl

thus Marines MUST work as a unit or they will DIE!!!!! (hehe, in a screwy mood)

and Aliens work rather will by them selves, and thus they get a full score board

and btw, all those Qs were rather good ones for a newb, they are not posted any where specificly (no FAQs, and no sticky threads saying DONT ASK!&#33

The aliens get points for frags, they are a DM oriented players. I don't think the aliens get points for resources.

Aliens get points for kills and, when they're builders, making buildings. The alien's score will show on the scoreboard. This will be just like in any other mod, where whoever has the most frags is the king of the hill.

The marine team gets points for kills and making buildings. Individual marines do not have their score shown on the scoreboard. Names are arranged according to what order they joined the marine team (I believe, I could be wrong), but they are definitely not arranged in order of who has the most points.

While we're asking newb questions, here's mine. How big are these levels? From the screenshots I've seen, the appear rather large, but I'm wondering if somebody could say how big they actually are?
  • MoleculorMoleculor Namer-of-Bob Join Date: 2002-01-24 Member: 9Members
    They're not rather large.

    They're friggin' HUGE!

About half the maps have pushed the limits of HL's map system multiple times, and one map I know of has reached the absolute maximum of at least one thing (surfaces). Which is bleeping hard to do.
  • InexorableInexorable Join Date: 2002-09-28 Member: 1360Members
That's insane. In a 'damn-cool-and-I-can't-wait-to-get-my-hands-on-it' kinda way, but insane nonetheless.

I suppose having a massive map makes those phase gates incredibly useful doesn't it?

Aw, I think everyone has taken this Aliens=DM thing a bit too seriously. It wont be like Q3A FFA though. You could be the best player ever and absolutely own but if you dont try and help the other aliens when they need them youll lose to the marines. Your shiny score wont meant anything then.

More n00b questions! This one is about resourcing. How much of your time is spent concerned with infrastructure? Is there ever a point the commander/gorge isn't worried about getting another resource node? Is taking out the enemy resourcing necessary, or simply one of the tactics you can use to destroy them?
  • ThansalThansal The New Scum Join Date: 2002-08-22 Member: 1215Members, Constellation
that probably comes down to personal prefs

however the commie is ALWAYS daeling with RPs, where to get em, what to/not buy etc

also if you checked the list of updates for RC8 you would see that one thing is that once a recoruce colector has been placed, that is the only one on that node, ever.

Thus is a RC is blown up, no more RPs from thatr node (I think thats cool)
  • MoleculorMoleculor Namer-of-Bob Join Date: 2002-01-24 Member: 9Members
But all of that is very subject to change.

Sorry, but no questions can really be answered about the resource model, mostly because it's in a large amount of flux, and no one really knows exactly HOW it'll be working.
