I'll explain this at a basic level assuming you know nothing (choose the info you need-skip the info you don't).

    1. As a marine, you get experience for killing aliens, being around teammates who kill aliens, or for shooting the hive. After gaining certain amounts of experience, you earn upgrade points. To use these upgrade points you click your right mouse button (default) and drag over to the upgrade you want.
    2. The weapon and armor upgrades are tiered or progressive. You need to select Weapons 1 or Armor 1 first. Then you can select Weapons 2 or Shotgun (in the weapons category) or you can select Armor 2. After that you can select Weapons 3 or Heavy Machine Gun or Grenade Launcher in the weapons category.
    3. In order to get a JetPack or Heavy Armor, you'll need to have at least Armor 2 and 2 available upgrade points.

    Hope that helps <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    AND being near a kill.

Ie, if somone in your group fires one pistol shot at that onos you just pumped 150HMG shots into to kill it, you still get some experience. Even if you had not shot it all.

I left my skulk in the hive room on faceoff, went to take a phone call, and came back to level 5...

I'm not sure if this is the place for this question but does the rank/score/kill no. (in combat) relate to your level? Seems to be no relationship from what I can see even though it seems to suggest so in the manual. It's just from my experience it seems a lot easier to gain xp as a marine than an alien.

Also, how close do you have to be for the 'collective' experience gain. Is it close to the kill, or close to the killer? in the same room, or within a certain distance?

Also, does this 'collective' approach to xp bias the marines who move in large groups over the aliens who tend to attack in smaller packs (it's hard to launch hidden attacks in numbers)

The areal xp is given around the <b><u>killer</u></b>.

There's always 100% xp coming from a dead player.
when there's just one person, that person gets the ful 100%

if there's 2 people, the killer gets a bit more, and the second guy near him, gets some too.
the killer gets a standard 15Xp for killing, and the rest of that 100% is divided.

    Example:
an alien gives out exactly 100Xp when it dies, that's 100%.

    There's 3 rines, rine1, rine2, rine3.

Rine1 kills the alien, and therefore gets the standard 15Xp.
    100-15 = 85.

    so that's 85 xp left, 85% left.

that 85% is then divided between rine1, rine2 and rine3.
so they all get about... 27Xp, and the killer got the extra 15.

    got it?

    ---

And rank/score/kills don't relate to your level.
because one can make 0 kills, and still level up, due to shooting the hive, or this locational Xp.
