Gamma Settings...

...yes, I HAVE read the Webbed post
Okay, here's the deal. I run Half-Life and its various mods in windowed mode, just because of personal preference. It's in a 800x600 window on my 1024x768 desktop, no oddities there. Whenever I enter a game, the game itself looks fine, but my desktop blinds me with gamma wash-out. I can't turn the gamma slider lower than halfway, it just jumps back up when I click OK or Apply.

Now here's the thing. I read the post on this, and none of it described me. This is a very recent 17" flatscreen CRT monitor, with every single setting at the factory defaults. Heck, there's not even a setting for Gamma, I have to set that through my video card, which is also at the factory defaults (I checked: Gamma is right in the middle at 1.00). Not using any third-party monitor tweaking programs of any kind, and my drivers are all up-to-date as of right now. The blinding desktop pretty much makes the game unplayable because it's so distracting and screws up your eyes. What's so special about it that NS has to use it, but no other mod does? They seem to get along fine without it.

there IS something special about NS

it has a built in toy called over bright.

Basicaly You ouldn't get the NS atmosphere if it didn't exist.

unfortunatly for you, this says no no to your windowed mode (no there is no way to turn it off, sorry)

Over-bright? How does that work, and what is its purpose?

I was under the assumption that so long as you didn't have any of the maladies in the Webbed post, you'd be fine. But now you're telling me that I'm screwed no matter what so long as I'm playing in windowed mode. That's kind.

ok, my post was to caustic, just deleting it.

needles to say, yah, overbright=nifty NS Atmosphere producing effect.

Also if the game crashes your desktop will blind you.

There is a progie in your NSP dir called resetgame, this will NOT fix your problem. (well you could try it)

I sure wish someone would actually tell me WHAT this does, WHY it has to be done, and WHY it can't just be disabled with no incredibly adverse side effects. So far all I've got are vague comments about "atmosphere", and, looking at previous posts, that seems to be all anyone's capable of saying on the subject. Atmosphere, atmosphere, atmosphere. That does NOT tell me anything worth knowing. If you're totally clueless, then fine, just say so and wait for someone who knows something about it to show up. I want a clear, technical explanation, preferably from someone involved with the development of this game, about why NS feels it has to blind me with gamma rays to be playable. I reiterate my point that no other mod out there uses this... thing, and they seem to get along just fine.

I had the same problem as you for a loooong time, I finnaly fixed it by using powerstrip, it's not perfect but any problem that crops up is pretty easy to fix.
Once you download it, PM me through the forums and I'll tell you how to get it to fix it.

Just do a google search and get the free one, hope it helps

EDIT: here it is PowerStrip but don't use it yet, wait untill we know its safe.

P.S. It seems to have the same atmosphere so i don't know what overbright is for.

EDIT: Whats your vid card?

1) Dude, stop being as ****, seriously.
The people who hang out in tech help are players just like you, I am not a mod, I am not on the dev team, I have never spoken to flayra or max, I have nothing to do with any of this.
If you want a FULL indepth expleantion you could try PMing Max (as he seems to be in the tech help forums the most), I doubt that this will get you a better answer.

Overbright:
No one has ever REALY explaine this but this is what I understand of it.
The way NS is rendered and such would actualy make the game stupidly dark if it wasn't for the overbright effect.

It can't be disable b/c there is no option to disable it (part of the code that we can't do squat about). It is not a 'you shouldn't disable it' it is rather a 'you CAN'T disable it'.

If you want a more indepth explenation of what overbrite does you have to talk to some one who realy knows:
Flayrah
Max
MonsE
and probably some other people, but not me. (note I am no one, I juat bum around in tech help, note that I am in the same group as the rest of you )
