    *sniff* I tried installing Slackware on my 486 once. Got through about 10% of the install and suddenly the power cut off to various parts inside (like it always does). Now, in -Windows- that wouldn't be a problem... jiggle the cord, and everything starts back up again, right where it left off...

    With Linux, it toasted the hard drive. <!--emo&:(--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':('><!--endemo-->

    I miss my 486.

    Linsux! I am amazed that isnt used more often. I also have not read any of those links, as I prefer to be blissfully unaware in Monse/joev/Slaptop Linux arguements.

    Me posting here was rather useless in fact, but it will probably cheer Monse up. Good good.

    My friend bought some Linux OS (I can't remember which one) because it 'never crashes' and because 'someone should shoot Bill Gates.'  Nevermind that most of his system crashes are related to user error (or ignorance; your choice) and that none of the programs he has will run on Linux.  I hope he figures out how to install it soon so I can laugh my ### off when he starts complaining about compatibility (okay, so he's not really a friend).

    I think that stuff gives them a power trip, or something.

    I can relate to molec, I'd made a 5 gig partition and was using a Linux copy my dad had downloaded, I was going to do it just as a test copy. Well my cables were swapped (the primary ide was going to d: and the secondary to c:) and a setting changed in the bios. Windows accepted this but apparently Linux ignored it and got confused. Long story short I had to hook up c to another computer to fix the boot sector and d: was completly scrambled.

    linux just usees a differant form of partitioning, a form that most IBM base computers seems to ave difficulty understanding.  For those of you with linux problems DOS bootdisk = saviour. (go into fdisk and delete the "NON FAT PARTITION OF DEWM" et oila new hard drive, or if your using YaST2 start the YaST program and goto the HDD configuration and make the linux partition = zero meg)
    The two reasons I don't use linux are a) it doesnt support my modem (which is of course internal and therefore relys on windows .vxds to work which linux doesnt have - ####### me didnt figure this out till AFTER hed isntalled linux) and b) the of course ever present lack of compaitbility with actual programs which means you end up relying on windows emulators, which to be frank, are crep.

    I love Linux, but I will not get into arguments, debates, "OS Wars", or anything of that nature because, in this case, they don't solve anything or change anyone.

    You love it or you don't.

    I use windows because I don't have to worry about downloading special stuff or haxoring things to play all my favorite games, cause I'm one lazy mofo.  But I have to use it in my Cisco Networking class because we are learning to do both and honestly I wouldn't really care running linux, but I don't really care about windows either.

    I've been using a distribution that is actually not even on that list there. It's called Server Optimized Linux, or SoL, and I like it quite a lot. I don't use it for a server, I just use it for web browsing & doing homework & playing UT2k3, and it's been on non-stop for about 2 weeks now. I think they should change the name to Stability Optimized Linux.  (you can find more information about SoL <a href="http://www.sol-linux.com" target="_blank">here.</a>)

    I even got HL running on it at one point, but my current graphics card is too crappy (read: oc'ed TNT2) for that to be worth it. I use my Win98 partition to play HL.

    I think that the next person who wants to code a "l33t" mod for HL should drop that idea and instead start coding a version of HL that runs natively on Linux. I'd do it myself, only I'm a terrible coder; I could hardly write my own (linux)printer driver from a template.

    There IS a Linux client and from what I heard it was tip top. If only I could find it again...
  • MonsieurEvilMonsieurEvil Join Date: 2002-01-22 Member: 4Members, Retired Developer, NS1 Playtester, Contributor
    Err, no. There is a linux HL server. There is no client - it would require access to the source code.
