as a comm
I have been doing some NS3 comming of course and I also saw the nifty catalist upgrade. Which I researched for my rines.

Now my prob is, how hard I try, I can never drop catalist packs. Ever. medpacks, ammo, anything goes fine. Like I said it is all researched, but the damn thing won't give.

How does a commander give his rines catalist packs?

It's a bug.. It seems Metamod(?) Doesnt recongnise the "Cat pack" and wont drop.. I believe it may be fixed soon.

cheers. Explains. My prefered servers indeed run metamod.

Does this also mean combat catpack fails?

    Combat Cats work.

Ns Cats don't. At least servers that use the metamod plug in.

Cats seem to be worthless anyways, I never research them.

Even when cat packs do work, I think they rather suck. The duration is quite short. I only drop them when I have loads of extra res sitting around in an endgame assault on a hive.

edit: they're pretty good in combat though when paired with a shotty, when you get lots of them without costing any res points.

Catalyst are useless with shotgun in Combat. You use 4-6 shots to kill an enemy. Seconds after that, the catalyst kicks in. Then you have only a few shotgun rounds left. If you reload, most of the catalyst-time is spent and when you actually get to fire, you can squeeze only a few shots before the effect disappears.

Only two times I have seen comm drop catpacks, and one of those times it was me. Comms cant possibly know when the situation is critical enough for catpacks to be effective. Apart from hive assaults.

If catpacks could be picked up (one more item to slot 4? ) and used by the marine himself when necessary?

Change list says it no longer harms health. this in CO and classic?

Anywayz I research them faithfully. If you are defending/attacking a hive it owns to have them.

Such fights usually kill rines fast anywayz, I prefer to take those 4 onos with me.

I seem to be one of the few commanders that actually likes to use catpacks - I usually research them right after the stable res flow and armor 2 has been researched. I found that they are most effective when marines actually KNOW that catpacks are coming (tell them!). They most definetly work best late-game with ha/hmg trains, which become trains of death and destruction against anything and everything when catpacked (hmg with 25% extra fire rate is just and HA running as fast as a skulk scares oni shitless). But the main advantage of catpack is in the cases where enemy skulks are trying to overpower you with numbers - catpacks add speed which lets your marines effectively dodge non-celerity skulks. It's quite fun to watch from bird's eye view, how your marines dispatch skulks that try to just keep up with marines that seem to move faster then them.
Catpacks with shotties are overrated though - they work best with weapons that have large magazine size (hmg and lmg). Speed boost is still a major factor though.
8 seconds effect time is good. In those 8 seconds, whatever creature you wanted them to down is either dead or the marines that were catpacked got killed. Or both the aliens and marines in the particular skirmish sucked so much, they don't deserve medpacks, much less catpacks

I use catpacks for rambo's believe it or not

Cat/Med every 10 seconds can get a res tower down extremely quick....

Yeah, I've been comming like 2.01 so far, but I'm going to start dabbling with cats and grenades to see how effective they are. Especially after realising that if you cat a few marines as an onos tries to escape he won't be able to get away... hur hur hur.
