Transparencies
I have Railings in my map. The blue part of the railing is showing up black, not invisible. Do I need to carve that area out of something to make it 'not there'?

I believe you want to make it a func_wall and go into render, set it to texture and 255, it think that'll do it. For the love of God and all that is holy do not carve it up as this will make many brushes that have no reason for existing.

...Or you could set the rendermode to Solid, fx amount 255, that usually works better.
Also, you should probably make it a func_illusionry with an overlapping brush of the same size and location covered with the CLIP texture, so you can shoot through it.

I know this because I just tried to do the same thing yesterday... this shows you how to make a see through texture that you can shoot through, but not walk through..

first off, www.valve-erc.com (there needs to be a link to this site somewhere in the forums, methinks)

A func_wall set to rendermode solid and fxammount at 255 is perfect, if you dont want to be able to shoot through it. Just read Valve-Erc for any questions you have.

3rd, for Gods sake never EVER use the clip tool. Ever. Or the hollow tool for that matter. Dont ask why, just dont. I know it seems stupid at first, but once you become an expert you'll understand

Sorry, I always forget which setting to use. But basicly don't use carve and hollow cause they're just not too smart at how the make the carves. E.g.: In places where you could just shorten one brush it will instead carve the other brush into 6 pieces.
