Catpacks don't make you reload faster last time I checked. As in NS, they're the most useful with an HMG because you rarely have to reload after getting the first kill. If you're lucky you'll mow down a skulk right before an Onos shows up or something.
25HP drain: If you dont go for the resupply upgrade they take you down to 1 HP after a few kills.
Time till you get them: It takes some seconds between the kill and when you get the cat pak. Since aliens usually hunt in groups i often die before the cat pak kicks in or it kicks in after we killed all the aliens and runs out before the next wave aproaches.
You DONT reload faster: I would use them with a HMG if it would cut the reload times but you reload at the same speed only that your magazines are empty much sooner forcing you to aim better or be defenseless very soon.
Generally i just take weapon lvl 3. Thats 30% more damage without penalty and i have it all the time. Maybe if cat paks would kick in faster and make you reload faster they would make me change my mind.
cat spamming might be good for taking down the hive faster...the 25% penalty in health is alright with me though.. lv3 weap+cat ... massive offence.. <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif' /><!--endemo-->

one of the most fun combos i have found in combat is: armor 1 (1) > armor 2 (1) > jetpack (2) damage 1 (1) > shotgun (1) > gernade launcher (1) catalyst (1) resupply (1) motion tracking (1)
** gave me a record of 127-13 **
as in the order that i get the upgrades depends on the map, how im playing, and how the aliens are playing.

Cat paks are just a hindrance since 260 Armor is worth **** with 1 HP since the first skulk bite takes you down.
I always take resupply, so catalyst is good for me.
With resupply:
- you have always 100 hp - you can survive those 2 bites - you have always ammo and you don't need the armory - you can use cat packs freely, 2 seconds later the cat kicks in, you have already full health.

Its a pretty good upgrade when you have a level 3 shotgun.

JP, resupply and cats were made to go together. A JP on cats is teh uber fast.
4 levels down, 5 left so I can get a l3 shotty and MT <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Just make sure you get HA to live longer:)
