<div class="IPBDescription">Oh the horror!</div> I just got braces today, and all I can say is that it hurts like a ****! I can't bite into anything because my teeth feel so weak....I have braces on top and bottom, and so far, the bottoms are the one's that hurt the most.

Anyway, has anyone here had braces (stupid question)? If you have, what did you do to take the painz0r away and basically any hints.

I've only used the waterpick because the toothbrush hurts way too much. The doc said to stay away from candy or anything that is sticky...... <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused.gif' /><!--endemo-->

/edit

Oh yeah, I took 2 tylenol and it hasn't helped with anything yet <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    Braces are the easy part, my friend. Just you wait for the retainer. Youl be praying for those braces in the end. As for the pain, I diddnt do anything. You stop feeling it later on.

    It stops hurting after a few days to a week. When you go into appointments, take some advil once you get to the waiting room, works like a dream.

    Edit: Note: I've had braces for 7 years. Must vent...

    Never had braces <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo--> I guess I'm just lucky to have straight teeth.

    Lots of NS always helps get rid of my pain. Also swimming takes my mind off it. Oh yes what ever you do ALWAYS floss. It makes things so much better. Good luck with the braces, don't let the pain get to you.

    Ooh, first getting them on is the worst. The pain goes away itself within 5 to 7 days, but before that, Advil (or your pain killer of choice) works wonders. Also, always take some right before you go to get your braces tightened, avoids helluva lotta pain.

    Ill just say that advil and soups are your friend

    edit: no ammount of painkillers will allow you to eat food, theyll just keep you off insanity.

    My teeth were all crooked when I was 10ish and my Mom thought I'd need braces. My sister's teeth weren't as bad as mine and she got them. Then, after acouple years, everyone in my family pretty much noticed my teeth had straightened out by themselves.

    I don't recommend anyone get braces until they're at least 18 <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo--> .

    Based off of having my wisdom teeth pulled, I would recommend taking an extra tylonel (or whatever), try not to take them as often, and try to sleep more. Sleeping with your head higher might help too, since you wont get as much blood to your head.

    You have my sympathy. When I got my braces I was on paracetamol for a week, and eating soup and mashed potatoes for two. I highly recommend gum gel - it's this stuff you rub into your gums with various things in it to make them stop hurting. I think it's designed for teething and\or dentures, or some such thing.

    I've got braces right now (bottom only) and I really don't notice them. After a few days (it was about 3 for me) they start to feel normal. Soon after that, you wont even notice they're there sometimes. Don't think you're out of the woods when that happens though, when they get tightened you might feel some pain. Not nearly as bad as when you first get them on, but it's still a little annoying. Good luck with them, be sure to brush your teeth well; if you don't you're likely to get some really bad gum disease.

    Oww, sorry man, I hate to hear that. Braces are a pain, I had them about 7 years ago, I was so glad to get them off, my teeth never ferlt smoother! Now I have a permanent bottom retainer behind my teeth, thats it....

    Oh, and tylenol never works for brace pain...take vicodin, or morphine, or good old fashioned Alocohl wroks too! <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    when it hurts the most, just forget it and bite as hard as you can into a towel

    it's exhilarating, to tell you the truth.

    just don't plan on eating soon.

    edit: wow.. just read all the horror stories. i was eating okay after a day... and after appointments, i could eat later that night. except for this one time when the doctor was forcing his metal poker thingy into the bracket and SLIPPED, and socked me in the face. then i couldn't eat for three days.

    Gum everything down and don't worry about getting stuff in between your braces, you get a skill that keeps you from doing that any more. I think you get it around level 10 if I'm not mistaken.
  • JefeJefe Join Date: 2003-04-21 Member: 15734Members, Constellation
    I still don't have said skill after 7 years...
  • MulletMullet Join Date: 2003-04-28 Member: 15910Members, Constellation
    Cool, thanks for the tips everyone. I just used my water pick (I think that's what it's called) and it felt pretty good....I tried brushing again and I figured I would just toss that out of my daily routines for a day or two <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    My teeth are naturally pretty straight, I just have a killer of an overbite. Woot, thanks!

    On a side note. When/If you get a retainer later, NEVER take it out when you eat. Your teeth move the most when you eat food. If you take it out when you eat, it will take longer for your teeth to firm up where they're supposed to be. It feels really awkward eating with it at first, but you get used to it.

    <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif' /><!--endemo--> you have a killer overbite, that means you get the hardcore headgear action. Good luck with that, headgear will make you compleatly forget the pain your in right now.

    Yeah i had an overbite, and they basicly gave me really short rubber bands connecting my top and bottom braces, really painfull, and you have to take them off to eat cause you can hardly open your mouth.

    I can't get the flossing down....Threading it through each bracket takes me like a whole minute. It's friggn so lame! It took me 30 min to floss my teeth lol...Does the water pick clean between your teeth just as much as floss?

    And you know that how?

    I had braces for a couple of years, went through the whole rubber band thing too. I can't remember any pain, but I am sure there was some. It does go away eventually, and taking the braces off is the best feeling in the world.
