Hello,

I have bought myself a dedicated box and its stats are:
  • RedHat Linux 9.0
  • Intel Celeron 2.0GHz (can be upgraded if needed)
  • 512MB ECC DDRAM
  • (2) 80GB EIDE 7200RPM
  • 100mb/s with 1200gb/monthly bandwidth
  • and some other misc. stuff

How many servers do you think I could squeeze into this machine, also note the fact that I can upgrade it to an Intel Pentium 4 2.4Ghz. I would like to run maybe 3 NS servers on it but I don't think I will be able to, and maybe a few other things once in a while such as HLTV.

Please post what you think, thanks!

(sorry for the bad spelling of possibilities tounge.gif )

If you can change away from Red Hat that would be advisable.

Maybe Debian or FreeBSD. I say this only because Red Hat 9.0 stops being supported on April 31, 2004.

As for the number of servers, if it's steam, then you could get maybe 2 DoD servers on there, and that's the closest to NS that I've seen.

Since NS 3.0 is being released to the public now, you may want to consider the very real possibility that NS 2.0x will no longer be played.

Also, I highly advise getting more RAM, 512 will limit you to 1 server in NS, sorry, but that's the case we've seen. 1GIG will definitely help you get closer to 3 servers.

by the way, where'd you get that insane ammount of bandwidth from? the most I've ever seen is 1TB traffic, and here you have 1.2TB.

The most RAM I've ever seen any HLDS process use (NS included) is about 80 Mb.

I have no idea where you've got this "512 will limit you to 1 server" from Peb's. I can comfortably fit 8 servers in 512Mb of RAM.... CPU is the bottleneck, not RAM.

Wrt CPU. NS is pretty well optimised now for CPU usage. Because of the nature of the game, it's always going to use more CPU than the likes of DoD or CS (because of the higher entity count and the fact that entities are created 'in game' all the time) but is not far above DoD in performance for most maps (some are harder on the CPU than others.. e.g. Hera).

Overall, the performance is not great on Linux at the moment though. This is simply because hlds itself is suffering performance problems, which Alfred Reynolds of VALVe is actively looking into at the moment. We wait with baited breath for the outcome smile.gif

Also note that NS:Combat uses significantly less CPU than classic NS (because of the lower entity counts) and you can probably fit 2 dedicated NS:C in the same CPU usage bracket as a classic NS server or one running a mixed mapcycle (default)

The move from a celeron to a P4 is *highly* recommended. Recent discussions on the hlds_linux list have shown that L2 cache (and the bigger the better) is crucial to hlds (and hence NS) performance under Linux. Celeron doesn't have L2 cache, and hence with hlds 3.1.2.0 and above will perform below expectations.

NS 2.0, late game (1 hour long) had me using 48% of my ram with 1gig total.

Both sides were fully teched, and the server crashed a little while later because it couldn't handle any more turrets. It was somehitng like 5 turret farms with 3 TFs each, with the aliens holding 2 of the hives... marines were overall playing poorly, but the comm was excellent and managed to stay the game.

The aliens where your "average" (whatever that means) pubbers who were using a little teamwork and lots of D and S chambers. (The hive with M chambers was taken by the marines)

The server I ran at the time was known for it's long games, and people started to really hate bast after a while. smile.gif Maybe it was a problem with the 3.1.1.1 that made me take that approach?

My appologies if it seemed incorrect. I was going on what I had previously experienced.
