Has anyone ever played Starflight? Anyone here -remember- that game? Wasn't it just the coolest? Did you find Earth? How about the Red Cylinder? Did you ever beat the game?

    *grins*

It's a 1982 space-RPG. You have a spaceship, a crew, and you have a MASSIVE (and I mean -massive-, by even today's standards) section of galaxy to explore in, complete with solar systems and planets that you can land on and drive around on exploring.

It fit on two 5.25 disks. And took my father and I a year to beat.

Heheh, 1982 is a bit before my time The game sounds cool, though. Is it at all like Elite?

I have no idea what Elite or Earth and Beyond are. (What are they? )

You haven't heard of Starflight? Your avatar is the -exact- symbol of the government/space agency of the game. Except there's was in 16 (or maybe 256) colors.

Earth and beyond is a game where you build a ship and character and go around exploring different star systems getting jobs, etc you can be an explorer fighter, and many other types. You can actually explore different star systems and such the envirement is HUGE! In the beta there are 4 different galaxies and about 10 to 15 star systems, so its a really fun game but my ocmputer cant play it because of my vodoo 3. Their website is http://www.earthandbeyond.ea.com

Wow. Nice. In Starflight there were about... oh... 200 or so star systems, about half of which had planets, everywhere from 1 to about 7 (with one, Sol, having 8 or 9).

And don't worry about feeling young. I was -born- in 1982. I didn't play Starflight till about 6 years later.

I think I have an idea of the game Mole is talkin about. Not much like Earth and Beyond, which is (from what I hear) a "point and click" to shoot and a "point and click and pay the man" to upgrade yer ship.

Oh definitely not that. Think... any of the Ultima games with only one town, and in space, and just money for 'leveling up'. Then add in about 150 planets, all of which are explorable and so large that you can not explore more than about 1/20th of a planet without landing in another area, seven or so races of aliens, and you'll have an idea of the game.

Damn, that's freaky. All that was was me messing around with a sky picture and then putting a funkay looking "I" on top. Wierd.

Interstel! I think... I think that's what it's name was... been -so- long... It's the I that's the symbol (not the sky).

I can't say I was very impressed by Starflight...

Anyway, some people apparently love it enough to recreate it...

That's not a recreation, that's a new game based on the first two. [edit]Wow. They've gotten much farther.[/edit]

BTW, the first one was -way- better than the second.

I never played the original starflight, but I was ALL about starflight 2 bay-bee!

I freakin' LOVE that game, it's really one of the most fun I've ever played. A perfect example of how excellent gameplay can make up for lack of flashy graphics.
