Psu Question

Probably being too cautious
Hey guys, I just have a quick question. I just got a snazzy new computer and a snazzy new PSU for it. I only have to power the MB, a DVD-ROM, CD-RW, and 1 SATA HD. Now, is there any reason I can't pop open the PSU and unsolder the connections for all those extra power cables? They are generally in the way and restricting airflow. I don't see any reason why I can't in my mind...
I'm fixing up my case so I can hopefully overclock my new Athlon64 3000+ a little. So I was monitoring the temp w/ my nifty parallel LCD display I rigged up, and the temp on the CPU was maxing out at about 41C while I was playing some semi-intensive games for a while (namely NS, Tron 2.0, Max Payne 2). I took the PSU out to move some stuff in my case around, put it back in, and suddenly it was maxing out at 45C instead. And the only thing physically changed was the arrangement of the unused cables from the PSU.
Anywho, anyone think of any reason why I can't take those extra cables out? I just want to run it by someone else before I do it.

I really wouldn't do that. You never know if it could cause a power surge to the other connectors or extra energy to the other hook ups by removing some of them... Also PSUs keep a large amount of energy inside them even when turned off/unhooked, enough to give you a pretty bad burn if you were to open it up and touch the wrong piece... The only stuff I have ever changed inside a PSU was to trick it to think it's plugged into a motherboard(green/black wire trick) and still I was very careful what I did, and would never consider it for any use other then testing fans/cathodes(or power an electro-magnet in the case of my science fair project ).

    what xyth said.

If you want to get them out of the way:

    ZIP TIES!!!!

they are gods gift to case managment

Theoretically you could do it, but I wouldent. But hey, it's your funeral.

TBH I wouldnt waste my money on round cables or modifying the PSU as you talk. For god sakes you people are paranoid, back in the day computers ran without any fans, in tiny cases with all the wires crammed together. Youre fine.

I used to put together old 486's from spare parts (I had about 10 at one point), so I remember the stack of Intel 486 DX CPUs with *maybe* a whopping 1/4 inch high heatsink, and definitely no fan. But there is a good reason for that. Those old CPUs ran at all of 5W of power, max. The new Athlons and Pentium 4s run anywhere from 80W - 100W.
I wouldn't be spending any money either, just soldering... but I think you guys have convinced me not to bother with it and just tie them out of the way somehow. Course, someone could have said "Computer go BOOM" with no explanation and I would have run away, screaming like a school-girl .

    Computer go BOOM

Just duct tape the wires to the sides or something. Duct tape holds the world together.

If you know how powersupplies work and are fairly confident in your electronics skill. Discharge the capacitors first. Then simply cut the wires that you do not need. (you can cut them at the entrance to the PSU so you do not have to open it if you are comfortable with this procedure) Tape up the individual ends of the cut wires and then tape the entire cut bundle together (made sure no wires touch).

Use proper tools and handling techniques.

between duct tape and zip ties we can solve world hunger,

get a bigger case, then the wires wont seem so crammed, I would NOT mess with the power supply, people have already mentioned twist ties and the like, so if you dont want a bigger case (with nore fans) find something that compacts the unused wires and play with placement.
