Sooooo... don't open that attachment. For all of our sakes.
Isn't it spelled Bagel though? Darned irresponsible virus writers, can't even proofread.

Seconded.
My aunt did. She is a PC n00b. She barely knows how to connect to the internet or get her mail, and she usually ejects the floppy disk from the floppy drive when she puts a CD into the CD drive, cause she doesn't think both could be read at the same time. She owns a PC for more than 2 years now
And after she got a virus (OK, it were about 5-8 virusses) she kept saying "I don't have a virus" even after random files where sent to random people in her Outlook phonebook. And I really think there are more people like her spread all over the globe (even if maybe not as n00b as she is ). And just because you are an internet junkie, play online games and are a member of a community (read= you know how to use a PC to it's max) you cannot say

QUOTE

Who opens attachments named (random filename e.g.t3h h4x).exe these days anyway?

It's like saying: Who shoots people these days anyway? Everyone knows shooting people is bad... [OK, maybe an extreme comparison...]
In other words: Mind the n00bish...
The virus itself is pretty stupid. Just an plaintext email, the subject is always "Hi", and the attachment is an exe. I mean hell even my mom knows not to open that sort of thing...
Please, don't think everyone is so familiar with his/her PC
update : now with more scary
Same, most important stuff I was able to backup though because I was able to get a second version of windows XP on without overwriting everything, most of my files corrupted and I couldn't access the "my documents" folder, so I just had to settle with burning my entire Shared Folder.
hehe, attachments? what are tohse? I have to frikken TP into my mail server if I wana touch those things (not that I ever WANT to)
[edit] ok, thats a funny typo (hehe teleport into my mail server ) I actualy have to FTP in [/edit]
This one sounds lame... what is the body of the msg generaly?
I meen, alot of people just go on auto piolit when checking email, and if they get an email from a friend (or possibly even their tech savy son/grandson whetever) why wouldn't they open the attachment?
Remember, alot of these virii/worms work by spoofing email addresses, so if my grandmother got an email from me, my bor, or my dad telling her to open the attachment she probably would
most people don't know that it is possible (let alone how simple it is) to spoof an email addy.
So don'tr go around bashing those people who don't know as much about computers as you do.
People are not idiots for not being computer savvy.
Do you know how to bake a caek, Make a bookself, repair a car, Wire a house for electricity?
well, acording to your deffinition if you don't know one of those things your an idiot.

This coming from the guy who fell for "The Best Blonde Joke Evar"
renegade, I think you got me mixed up with some one (what blond joke? aside from the ones aimed at my own blond head? )
oh, you talking about this one? (Did I fall for that? I only remember clicking through about 2 times before getting it... Then trying to find the begining... couldn't ;()
Vulgar, the emails come from people who had you in their address book...
The better crafted ones will take and address book ad randomly pair up email addys, sending the virus to one from a spoof of the other
I have gotten virus emails from mac users (note I knew it wasn't from them simply b/c I know how to check for spoofs), seeing how as there is about one virus out there that will effect a mac..... yah
oh, and the bookshelf line is pointing out:
Look, some people know carpentry, some people know computers, some people know how to cook, different people know different things. I know some rudementry carpentry (enugh to screw sometihng up big time) this dosn't make me an idiot, it just makes me unknowledgable about a woodplane.
This is true. You tell them 'don't touch' but they do it anyways.
Thats what you expect from the world.....
Just try to expect more surprises from life.
On the topic of viruses....ROFL thats one freaky picture
The attachment looks like the windows Calculator, the body of the msg is test, and the subject line is always Hi.
It also dosn't seem to use spoofing (like many previous ones) but insteads only spams itself to people in your address book
AND THEY RELEASED IT ON A WEEKEND IN AUSTRALIA!!
so, its got released in the arse end of no where (not to offend aussies, but you have a small country), on a weekend so most IT departments had PLEANTY of time to set up safeguards before every one came back
Does nobody take backups these days?
My vaguely-important data is duplicated on three different PCs, with more transient, work-in-progress stuff backed up on to rewritable CD or Zip disk. Data for archival is put on CDR and stored in another part of the house, while anything particularly important gets uploaded on to machines all over the world.
And I'm not even remotely paranoid. I've got an old tape drive I'm not doing nightly backups with!

I certainly see your point, and agree somewhat.
However, they don't get on CNN and tell you that you need to add eggs to the cake mix. And if someone DOES tell you to add the eggs 50 times and you still don't listen, you deserve to have no cake.
i recently got a test.bat from somone... saved it to my desktop, opened it in notepad.. and started reading away... some nasty stuff in there...
does it make me an idiot for opening it? does it make me an idiot for saving it?
does it make me an idiot for sending a reply telling the guy that it didn't work, and should test it himself?
some people won't learn, some peaople won't care, and some people... don't have anyone in their adress book for a reason.
The people who are told 50 times specificly don't open any attachments uneless you are aboloutly positive you know what it is, well yah they are silly
but if my grand ma gets an email from me telling her to open said file, well I don't blame her for messing up (not that my grandma has done anything like this, just an example:P)
If a home user makes one of these screw up, well I understand it.
If some one specificly ignores their IT departments request's, well then yes they are idiots.
However most users don't have an IT department to tell em what to do, so I am not surprised that people mess up.
