<div class="IPBDescription">Or: SNES controller conversion thingie</div> I was thinking of building a computer just for running emulators, with associated TV out and such and so forth, and I was wondering if there was any way to hook SNES controllers to a computer. Quick google search left me hopeless, but I thought you guys could help.

Mods: All the games I download are ones I already have, so nyah.

    Yeah, actually. Its quite easy, assuming you can solder. I've done it, it works great, you can have up to five controllers on one parallel port. Also, the drivers are built into Windows and many UNIX joystick modules. Heres some info: <a href='http://www.arcadecontrols.com/Mirrors/www.ziplabel.com/dpadpro/snes.html' target='_blank'>http://www.arcadecontrols.com/Mirrors/www....adpro/snes.html</a>

    I highly suggest going to eBay and just gettnig a SNES. Its actually cheaper than building a computer from scratch (unless you already have all required parts laying around), not to mention that it just feels right. And its nice to pop in the cartridges again, rather than messing w/ menus and savestates and all that jazz...

    But then again I'm a purist. :)

    Or you could buy a modified Xbox and ram a shedfull of emulators on that bad boy (N64, SNES, whatever), that's what I'm planning to do.

    I still have a SNES, shame the only "classics" I have are Mario Kart, F-Zero, Mortal Kombat 2, and Killer Instinct.

    I'm very lucky. I got Super Mario World, Mario All-Stars, Link to the Past, Super Metroid, Mario Kart, SF2 Turbo, Killer Instinct, MK1, MK2, Mega Man X, and more! And while I've had these emulated for years, its great to get the actual cartridge in your hands again. Emulation is good, but its not good enough I say! :D

    Oh yeah, I forgot I had Super Mario All-Stars (with Super Mario World). I sometimes prefer emulation...if I have a nice gamepad.

    Ach! Double-post, sorry.

    I'm building one because I'd like to play PSX (I have a PS2, it just only reads DVDs...piece of crap...) and games on other systems as well.. We also want it for Stepmania. Otherwise I'd head right over to eBay and buy one.

    The only thing I need is an NIC, a CD drive, and a cheap vid card that has a TV-out.

    I'd love to get an SNES, personally, as there's a store around here that sells SNES games (too bad they're out of the systems) but this is much more practical.

    Skulkbait: Exactly how much soldering would I have to do exactly? I'd rather not ruin anything and that link was not helpful in the least.

    You might have some trouble then...

    Basically what you do is take a DB25-Male soldertab connector (available at your local radioshack or equivelent), and solder wires from the DB25 pins to a small nail, which you then stick in the corresponding pinhole in the SNES controller's plug. DB25 Pins 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9 get soldered to diodes (make sure they point the right way) which all get soldered to one nail. bassically it breaks down like this if you're making 2 controller interfaces:

    <!--c1--></span><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>CODE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='CODE'><!--ec1-->
    DB25 5,6,7,8,9 -> diodes -> nail -> nail
    DB25 2             -> nail -> nail
    DB25 3             -> nail -> nail
    DB25 10           -> nail
    DB25 12           -> nail
    DB25 18,19      -> nail -> nail
    <!--c2--></td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'><!--ec2-->

    so the wires from DB25 pins 5,6,7,8,9,2,3,18, and 19 are shared with the corresponding nails that would plug into the 2nd controller, DB25 10 only goes to the first controller, and DB25 12 only goes to the second controller.

    If that still isn't clear, I'll post some pictures of my rig later.

    Slightly off-topic

    Somebody is currently developing a SNES emulator for the GBA. I find that quite spiffy.

    No, that was Sword of Mana. Which is an updated version of Seiken Denstesu 1 which was on the original Gameboy.

    Secret of Mana is Seiken Densetsu 2.

    I have a pair of controllers that look somewhat similar to the N64 and I must say that most N64 games feel much better when emulated than when played on the real console. Can't say no to 800x600 at 160 FPS(vertical sync on!).
