By a semi-noob, for the very noob
Having played NS for the short period of 3 months +, I've come to the conclusion that the Kharaa Fade is the most difficult class to use effectively. This conclusion was reached from the many times i've died as a fade, and the relatively less often times when i die as an onos or lerk.
From observing some very skilled players using fade and from my own experience, I've made up some(not so obvious) tips for those who still can't figure out how to fade effectively. I'm hoping more l337 fade users can add in their own tips.
Dos
*Do Adjust your mouse sensitivity to be higher- you will need to quickly swipe rines that strafe around you
*Do blink upwards when trying to escape marines- it's more difficult to for them to suddenly aim up then sideways.
*Do blink and swipe- You don't see the animation, but it IS possible to blink and swipe in sequence. This applies also to skulks leap and bite.
*Do engage marines singly- especially if you're not experienced with fade. a 1 on 1 engagement between a fade and a vanilla rine is the only one in which a fade, no matter how n00b, can have a guaranteed 99% win ratio
As you get more experienced with killing rines quicker, you can try to take on more at a time.
*Do blink away often- especially against a group of rines. It's better to be cautious then to waste 50 res. The first step towards becoming a good fade is IMO learning to kill single vanilla rines quickly and efficiently(without losing too much health). Do that before you try engaging groups.
*Do get the Regeneration upgrade and help the team by taking out elected RTs- Even if you are the WORST fade user in the world, i assume you can stand in front of an electrified resource tower, swipe it a few times and then step back to regen. This is one of the EASIEST and most EFFECTIVE way of helping your team without risking your life when you go fade.
*Do try and get Silence or Celerity instead of Adrenaline. Noob fades will tend to get adrenaline because they can blink more, but once you've learned how to blink effectively conserving energy, you'll find adrenaline not to be really that useful. The only time when Adrenaline REALLY helps is when a 3rd hive is up and you can start spamming acid rocket.
DONTS
*DONT blink towards ANY marines head on- If you approach them in a single horizontal straight line right in their face, it doesn't need to be said that they'll have a pretty easy time aiming at you, since you don't change position on their screens and actually become a larger target.
The exceptions are if you're confident and want to do a blinking swipe. Still, it's better to approach sideways or zigzag.
*DONT stand on Infantry Portals or Phase Gates. If you're gonna camp them, stand before them, not on them- or you WILL get telefragged.
*DONT move via default too much- as in running or walking. You have Blink- the most efficient way of moving at your disposal at all times(except when your last hive gets taken out). USE IT. Especially do not walk/run if you're not within swiping range of a marine.
*DONT try to engage rines with shotties or HMGs, even single ones. If you absolutely must do it, remember to blink around to make them waste ammo as much as possible. Otherwise, since you are a n00b fade, you will die. Quickly.
*DONT go ANYWHERE near ANYTHING holding a SHOTGUN. Did i mention avoid shotguns?

once you get good you can take on anything, even ha hmg/sg. the key is to blink in blink out.
HA HMG/SG's.
blink in hit 1 blink out. you will hardly be hurt (3 click on regen most of the time). wate till healed and repeat.
if you can manage it fast enough they will not have the time to weld but at some point they will try. that is when you strike. blink in hit one 2 or more times and blink out as soon as the gun fire starts up. even if you are unable to kill any (most likely you will get a few over time) they will be unable to do anything as they are trying to kill you instead.
blink is your friend and the only reson fades are any good at all.
fade early game.
once you get good you can kill so many mariens early game its unreal. the problem with that is the marien rts are still up and you cannt kill all the mariens some will get out. remenber it only takes one marien, 75 rez and 3 to 4 pings and a hive is down.
the better thing to do is go kill their rts. the only time you dont kill their rts is if 1 of your rts is under attack. blink is fast so use it and save that rt. then just blink right back to the rt you were killing and finsh it off (there could be a few mariens there welding the rt to kill. may help you cope with not getting as many kills as you could).
as i said before dont go fade early game if you are new to the fade. that 50 rez loss hurts the team. with 50 rez you could have got upgrade chambers or a hive or badly need rts. 50 rez makes for a good start on a WoL, gorge, 3 oc and 1 dc.
and i have to say this because people still dont seem to understand...
with even teams (skill) the mariens need 3 rts at all times min. to get ups and ha/jp's. more that likely they will have 4-6 rts for the first part of the game.
your team needs at lest half the number rts as players to beat the mariens upgrades. to make it clear, a 8 player team needs 4 rts at all times in order to get hives, fade and onos before the mariens get too powerful to combat.
this is not hard line as things can go badly for the mariens or you may get a bad onos/fade.
also there is little to no reson not to drop something at the start/soon after the start. if you save the 25 rez you start with you only save your self 1-2 min if there are half the number of rts as players.
Hit and run.
Play some games as a rine first, and learn what scares you most about fades. Then turn that knowledge around.
Fades are exceptional ambush killers, and if marines are fool enough to camp in one spot then you can blink in and out snagging one at a time. While giving you res and cutting their numbers (temporarily) it also, more importantly, freaks out marine players and can halt entire advances while they scream for heavies and shotguns.
Panicking marines will do more damage than you will, something we all know if we've ever sat on the marine team and watched the teamspeak go berserk after the first fade is spotted.
- If handling a group of marines, trail behind them, pick them off one by one.
- Stay hidden. Sneak around until the golden opportunity to strike comes.
- No kamikaze attacks. Those won't work.
- Keep away from marine base until Hive 3 and/or endgame.
- Take down ANY marine RT you happen to stumble across.
lets fades fight protracted battles against groups by just zipping around... and react VERY quickly to anything, youll never be out of energy..
Adren is not useful for only blink-swiping effectively, but for killing rts and metabolizing at the 2nd hive. This makes killing electrified rts twice as easy in pub games.
Get adren only if you need to take down elec rts or if you have three hives. Otherwise always get celerity if you're being serious about it. Without celerity a marine can strafe faster than you and do 100-150 damage before you can take him out. Celerity speeds up your blink, so when you get it, just tap the blink and you'll fly across the room. A quarter second blink with celerity will bring you from one side of ns_bast refinery hive to the other.
edit.. celerity fade is amazing. period. Im so sorry i was so wrong about adrel.

interesting, ive never played much fade and started last few days and always went for standard adren, but if celer is good...hm...ill try it out tomorrow as well :x
Silence : Silent blinking and slent takedowns. Great for marine squads that are VERY spread out. Not very popular due to what it needs to be specialized in.
Celerity : For true hit and run, adds speed to running and blink. Generally popular, but tied with Adren.
Adrenaline : For those who blink a lot, and find that they run out of energy after every battle engagement with a marine.
Two Hives (Assuming you got MC with Adrenaline) : Hit and hide I guess, you don't necessarily have to run a long distance away. A place around the corner should be sufficient enough for you to Metabolize and go back in for more action.
Three Hives (Better upgrades of choice, Cloaking or SoF): Stealth, kill and regenerate. For the guys you don't want to get up close and personal with it's ok to spam acid rockets.
For the first 2 hives if your good enough you can take on a group of 3 LA at the most with some level ups.
I wouldn't promote attacking a heavy unless you have back up. Heavies are pretty painful with a shotty or HMG, HA with a GL you can do.
I swear, you WILL feel the difference after using silence, the stealth really works.
Celerity helps close the remaining small gap after you blink faster, and though I haven't really paid attention to change in blink speed, that must be another plus
The reason why i don't think adrenaline isn't really useful is because the Fade never actually runs out of energy to blink- just click constantly and the energy regen will make sure that you will blink in bursts.
Although this is not as fast as a constant blink, it will suffice when you need to retreat.
Exactly. Gimme some dap! *Holds out hand* Now is that the same effect for bile bomb on buildings? I like the graphic, looks like an acid shower.
This upgrade is also very useful when travelling in vents where you can't really blink hop (especially when going from Ventilation to Biodome or vice versa) , though celerity might help it as well.
Cara celerity was the best upgrade combo on 1.04 : what got to be called the Samuraï Fade , circlestrafing marines and killing them with ease. It is particulary effective if you have lots of DCs and MCs around.
When the marines are running low on res , try spotting the best marine players and hurting them. The comm will probably medpack them , rinse and repeat and make your team win the game. Likewise , as a regen fade it's worth making the marines waste all their ammo , wait until some of them start to *click* and only strike them when the comm drops them ammo (which means they're reloading and can't use the bunch of bullets they've just taken) to maximize the res loss.
When attacking elec structures or buildings within their attack range : take the time to regenerate when you have a 2 digit armor value. You never know , a shotgunner might pop out of this phase gate or worse , right behind you.
Always protect the Gorges. You're dangerous enough to distract the marines , and have enough HPs to directly cover your builder pals , the longer they survive the more they heal you. Chances are the marines attacking you are low on health , and a level 1 armor marine will die in 1 healspray or spit after you hit him twice. Only flee if you're out of armor , or if the marines have HMGs.
Likewise , don't let the Lerks down. For now (in 2.01) , Lerks can't dodge bullets effectively , while blinking Fades are very hard to hit. So if you see a Lerk trying to flee , distract his attackers by blinking at them. Once they're out of harm ways they can umbra you or spike/spore the marines chasing you.
