Problems with hl and wc

Hl doesn't like opengl when wc running
If I run HL without anything running in the background, It runs fine in OpenGL. If I launch HL with WC running, OpenGL does not work, it says: "This OpenGL mode is not supported by your video card". But if I switch to D3d in HL it works fine with WC running. I think it is because both WC and HL are trying to use the OpenGL drivers at the same time. I have a Geforce 2 GTS 32 meg Asus v7700 and am running win98se and WC3.3 and the latest HL.

Well, I think that the solution to this problem is to not run WC and HL at the same time . An easy work around here is to just get a batch compiler. This way, you won't need WC open to compile your maps.

Very good idea. It's an even better idea because not having your mapping program open frees up more RAM for the compile tools (especially HLRAD) to run. Useful for those big maps.

Allow me reiterate another option you might find useful:

common problem, i have seen several times. for whatever reason, wc eats up video power like mad, and i strongly suggest that when mapping, dont do anything else that takes power from the graphics card.

I get the same error when I try to run HL with both monitors enabled (dual monitor setup using the nvidia twinview drivers), so I just have to disable my secondary monitor before running HL. I have to do the same thing if I want to use the 3d textured mode in WC, otherwise it runs waaaay to slow. Some programs are just 'smarter' about things like this. Serious Sam, for example, does a great job with sharing OpenGL and dealing with multiple-monitor setups.

Can't really comment on that, since I've never played Duke Nukem, but we just got Serious Sam 2 at work, and not only is is super fun, it's also the best looking engine I've ever seen. Those Croatians really scored!

    GOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAALLLLL!!!!!
and to think, an engine like that from guys who just made soccer games...
maybe we should whine for an NS port ~;)

I'm really wondering about the 'quality' of NVidia's drivers.

I've got a rubbish Matrox G400, and can do all sorts of things with multiple OpenGL contexts that seem to crash other people's machines.

I am not using nvidia's detonator drivers, I am using the ASUS 6.31c ones. If/When i get around to installing XP, I will try the new detonator drivers.

Can we please keep this on topic? That little Duke3d tangent didn't help much.

Hm. I'm running a Radeon VE, (ATI cards -suck- by the way) running the -second- most recent drivers for it (the most recent have memory leaks the size of the of the hole in the Titanic) and I'm not having any problems. I'm running OpenGL as far as I know... Yup. Running OpenGL, and really have no answers... how easy would it be to test out the other set of drivers for a bit? Just to see if it's a driver issue or a card issue? (Or it could be a driver issue and switching won't work... but that doesn't help you.)

what os you running right now scythe?

btw, those detonator drivers still have plenty of bugs. i get blue screen o' death from those babies more than ever (which is maybe once every 2 or 3 weeks), but damn, they are powerfull. i get a lot more speed from my g2 ultra!

any of you know the wickedgl team? their old wicked gl drivers for the voodoo2/banshee were increadible! they at least doubled, maybe tripled, performance in quake 2! wish they would release something for the newer geforce cards.

Yes. With some little additions and tweaks.

Sorry to drag off-topic Scythe. :/

Im running win98. I BOUGHT ss2 (albeit from a bargin bin). It totally freaked me out, those big zombie-spanner-weilding things were unrealistically tall I think.

/me realises that he is off topic

    GRR Naughty me.
