You're on steam. And you can't get more than 700x500 (I really don't know if that resolution exists.. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo--> ). And you need to change it back to atleast 1024x768 but you somehow can't. I don't know there should be something in the steam directory where you can change that. But I don't know steam very well. I'll give this a look.
I've met 10 year olds who still knew when to wrap their paragraphs and start a new one, and that to me is more impressive than playing games at an early age. Good writing is an important skill, sure it takes some effort, but if you try to learn it, or just use it more often, it suddenly doesn't take as much effort. Ok: End Rant...
Anyway what you are trying to say is that you turn your resolution to 700 by 500, and you get a black screen because your resolution is... too low? Why don't you just try a normal resolution, I mean you are a gamer, aren't you gonna try to get the best resolution you can out of your moniter? Like 1024 by 768 or 1280 by 1024? Why settle for 700 by 500, I mean that isn't even a resolution with a 4:3 ratio...
Try taking this to the Tech Support forums, I am sure they can help you out.

I believe there is a file that you can change in HL somewhere to change the resolution (it's where it's stored), however, I cannot remember what/where it is at the moment, or even be sure it exists. I'll post that here if I suddenly remember (since it's not a bad thing to know).

That's fine. However, it makes everything very difficult to read. When speaking, you do not use periods or commas per se, but you do make use of them as pauses, which makes things understandable. Imagine if someone splurted everything out in one, monotone voice, slurred their words, and so forth. It would be nigh incomprehensible. Writing is the same. If you choose to ignore the communication protocols and standards, people will either a) be unable to help you, due to their inability to understand you, or b) be disinclined to do so, since you just caused them pain/agony/eternal torment, or at least **** them off something awful.
Thus, I highly recommend you use periods, commas, and other useful punctuation.
