Pretty much all multiplayer mods based on HL support LANs. Just go to the button labeled LAN instead of multiplayer. Where is this thing on the main site that says you have to be on the Net?

NOTE: When NS moves to steam it will no longer support LANs because steam does not support LANs.

    Ah yes it does.

I am positive I read an update that fixed the can't-authenticate-with-steam LAN issue. Let's see if I can find a link...

    EDIT:
Ah. Sort of. ATM you cannot use steam on a LAN, but they have almost sorted that out. Behold:

    And FYI futbol:

    Starting Lan game.
HOST: Multiplayer - Lan Games - Create server.
CLIENT: Multiplayer - Lan Games - Join game.

I find it is more reliable to use two 98 operating systems to play. My XP Os does not allow 98 to see the server for some reason. Two XPs seem to run slower too. (But that could be my XP paranoia kicking in.)

Strangley, both OSes have no problem joining a Linux based LAN server though. <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused.gif'><!--endemo-->
