When I try to open a new game of halflife, or any other 'mods, multiplayer etc', it gets past the 'loading' text and the halfway during it loading through the console window i get an error 'Unhandled Exception in HL.EXE'.

Anyone know what's up?

Sounds weird, when did this problem occur?
If youre running XP/Norton Ghost you can try to ghost the computer..

Give us more info, OS, updates, hardware, the exact error message, complete with any extra information you can get
    Did you try reinstalling HL?
    Did you install SvenCoop 3.0?

Norton ghost is a program that enables you to image the harddrive of one computer and install the same software configuration on all computers accross a network.

99.999% of home users wouldn't keep regular ghost backup images of their HD.

A reinstall of Half-Life would almost certainly fix this problem however I've had this problem before and I didn't have to reinstall to fix it. I can't remember what I did do though...

Make sure you don't have any weird command switches after your HL shortcut. You could also try starting "hl.exe -game ns" or something like that and see if you can start directly into another mod.

Installing steam would probably help matters a little too.

I've found it what it is, it doesn't like OpenGL or D3D, I'm trying to play NS while my main comp's being fixed, so I dont have any ghosts of this machine, and the ones of my other machine only work on that machine <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

It's a piece of rubbish, but:

    AMD K6/2 500MhZ
    64MB Geforce 2 'something'
    200 MB RAM.

I was using HlToolZ to crappen it up as well so it would run faster, think some of those settings have interfered with halflife.

Looks like Software mode fun for me for a week <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo-->
