<div class="IPBDescription">A new direction for terrorism?</div> <a href='http://www.news.com.au/common/story_page/0,4057,8275228%255E2,00.html' target='_blank'>Clickeh</a>
I saw this news piece whilst brousing through my local news site. It seems to indicate that terrorism may be shifting in a new direction. Certainly targets like large passanger liners are vunerable to attack, and even a simple explosive device on such a vessal could cause catastrophic loss of life. What worries me more though is the prospect of oil or liquified natural gas tankers being hijacked at sea and sunk or blown up in western harbors. The reports of new attacks on aircraft also seemed to show that Al Qaeda is still quite determined to employ air attacks again.
All in all, it's a worrying report. If Al Qaeda is indeed capable of undertaking such missions, one must ask ones' self what effect, if any, the ongoing war on terror has had on the terrorist groups' organisation. Of course, the simple fact that these attacks havn't occured or have been stopped might indicate that Al Qaeda may be a broken force.

Do you have a better solution though? Its not like we can just sit back and do nothing. The war on terror is both a military and financial/economic/diplomatic war. It cannot be accomplished following either method alone.

Oh I'm not suggesting that the war on terror is a bad thing (terrorism must be combatted). I just question whether events such as the Iraq War really helped us fight terror. It was after all a fairly major conflict in the war on terror. Also I wonder if we are using the right tactics. But I'm not a general or intelligance official <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->
I wish more people would understand that little fact.
where are the antiterrorism ninjas ;_;
You should win an award for that <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->
Anyway I think we need some perspective here:
As long as we harness technology for some obscure purpose something can and will go wrong to kill everyone using it, and there will ALWAYS be some sick stupid **** who wants it to happen: Either a religious nutcase or some 14 year old hacker who was breast-fed until he was 7.
You think terrorism now is bad?
Imagine in the future when we're colonizing the moon... GG explosive decompression.
British and US satalites ahve been looking for them in the Indian Ocean and and near the african coast.
CNN donest tell ya things like that. ooh how I love censorship and information control.

but then again boats are probably the worst places to be on as a terrorist.
1- if you get caught, there's no place to run to, unless you plan to steal a life boat or have some other boat come up there
2- boats carry many, many, passengers, and thus many many eyes. the more eyes, the less of a chance they'll get away with planting that explosive under the table
3- vital areas like the engine room are constantly inhabitted by the crew and similar personel. if you get caught here, especially with your explosives, you'll be doing 50 lashes for sure.
Not exactly a good idea to attack a ship, if you ask me. NTM they're VERY difficult to sink (despite what you think, most ships can stay afloat even while heavilly damaged for hours, or perhaps even indefinately.)

Davis, you got any links for that info? It sounds quite interesting and I want to find out more about it.
War begets war.
So you're saying we should get rid of all policemen? You just described all law enforcement on earth and their fights against the common criminal.

And what cause would that be? The right to oppress women? The right to not hold elections? The right to deny freedom of speech and religion? There are so many wonderful causes in the middleeast that demand defense from the infidel!
