Programs

IM sorry if this question has been asked before, but the search-function screws up in IE, and my Fbird is FUBAR at the moment.

Well, I've been doing digital-abstract art for quite some time, in programs like 3dsmax etc, with basic boxmodelling.

But i want to move on and start modelling "real" things.

What applications are you guys using when modelling? 3dsmax, Wings3d, Maya, MS3d, Cinema 4d (if its possible to model to the HL engine in it?). And I also want some good (weapon)modelling tutorials

Thanks in advance.

ok... to be more polite than the post above me i'll say this.

programs for modelling are milk-shape, 3d studio max, or anything top notch (it's easy to convert to a ref_smd)

tuts for weapons are in the stickied thread at the top

postcount < 100... therefore, it's much less offensive, if somone like... say, ME (with 3,000+ posts) would do the same thing...

I use milkshape, nice and cheap, $35 USD isn't too bad, although most "professionals" will laught at you for using it... it's still worth the download. the newest alpha tech release (1.7.0) has many features and plugins that make it more useful than ever before.

I have been using milkshape for close to a year, and have not been able to fully discover it's full potential... it's more powerful than anybody could have imagined.... and VERY cheap and easy to get/use

other than that, most of the "pros" use 3D studio Max... harder to get a hold of, WAYYYY more exspensive... not nobody will EVER figure out 100% of it, unless your the one coding it...

If you're not too serious about modelling, definately pick up MS3D, it's good to play around with, but the renderers it has are dire at best, so if you want any high quality images, i recommend looking elsewhere.

I will, of course, recommend 3D Studio, but it has a ridiculously high price tag, but it's relatively easy to get to grips with (In the short time i've played with it), but it's hard to master. If you're extremely serious about taking up modelling (you'd have to be at the price it costs), i'd wholeheartedly endorse this product, it is great.

softimage XSI is free... unless you want a corperate lisence...

it's nice, but last i tried it... it gave me a warning about not being able to see all the tool buttons because wasn't running 1600 x 1200 resolution...

Don't worry about that...It didn't mess me up when I played with it for a couple of weeks.
