Hopefully this hasn't been shown before. I searched for paoxysm in all the forums, couldn't find anything, so... =)

You'll need WinRAR or WinACE to unpack the movie.

It is pretty. Seems to be simple and not volumetric though. Of course I can't tell for sure by the video.

that is a pretty nice flame thrower, best one i've seen on the HL engine.
and if you're having problems viewing the video, make sure you get a mpeg-4 compatible codec. Like the one included with ffdshow.

reminds me of the welder firing dont u all think so as well?

How the 'flames' linger onto the aliens r perty, maybe the FT is *possible* after all!

What you'd want from a FT is to:

    -be pretty
    -be volumetric
-have acceptable performance on the server and client side.

I think I've read somewhere that so far they can only get two of those at once, but never all 3.

It's the last bit. I remember back when someone said most of the code was done, but was unacceptable because it was too laggy client-side.

EDIT : Looking at the video, looks like the Flamethrower has some latency issues as well, because the Flames dont go together with the barrel of the FT.

    Not to mention it isn't volumetric <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo-->

Thats what i heard too. I'd prefer a crappy looking minor lagging Volumetric Flamethrower, as long as its volumetric It has a use in NS in my opinion. Vent clearing fun indeed <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

I'd prefer it to be nice and volumetric, but a little laggy for client side.

I guess it comes down to which Flayra would prefer.

Perhaps the best example I've seen was done by a guy named FireStorm (he posts here: say hi everybody).
    www.panique.fr.fm - Warning, it's French.

It is possible to have a volumetric flamethrower in HL however there are a few constraints that limit it's use:

    1) It requires a hugely elaborate particle engine. - NS's particle engine pales in comparison to the beast that would do volumetric work. The creation of said particle engine could take the same time NS took to develop!
    2) To look good, I.E. not a bunch of particle sprites, it'd have to be OpenGL - This limits the audience.
    3) Processor use skyrockets. - Only high-end machines will be able to handle the beast.

that is not an accurate measurement of latency.

there's no evidence the flamethrower is being used online, but even if it was... unless it sent his ping to 500+... it's unlikely you'd notice any problem, even if it was lagging him and those around him.

anyway... I think flayra's being a little silly with the flamethrower requirements. why must it be volumetric? atleast, why must it be that way before we can try it out?

it's a different weapon and could be given it's own strengths and weaknesses. i.e, more effective against structures or ANYTHING of that sort.

obviously these "realism" requirements were not placed on other weapons of the game.
