Mad Props

<div class="IPBDescription">Oh yes! Mad Props</div> I have recently joined the NS community thanks to a referral of one of my old Day Of Defeat admins. After learning what the game is all about, being yelled at for being a noob, and finally breaking down to RTRM, I must say that this game truly a breath of fresh air. I am very excited about this project and am looking forward to running a port of this mod on my server.

I wanted to pay my respected to the NS team and let you know what a excellent job your doing. I plan to donate as soon as humanly possible.

In addition, I would like to participate in the server side beta test if that would be possible. Anyone who could direct me in the correct direction for this honor, I would greatly appreciate it.

By the server beta, do you plan on running one yourself?

Welcome to the community, BR. You'll probably want to talk to Joev, Puzl, or LightningBlue about the beta server stuff.

As far as I know, those participating in providing the beta servers do just that... give the Dev team a root/admin login on a box for the duration of the beta. To which the Devs can change the passwords freely, without requiring that they be given to the owner of the machine. They literally provide a server... they don't administer it. From hearsay, some do not even have a user-level login on the machine they are providing.

    Yes sir.

As of right now my Linux Server is running the Steam Version of the hlds_l for cs and dod. It is my intention to run a dedicated ns port as soon as the files become available for steam. However, I would not want to downgrade my server version or install a second instance of the hlds_l (because of harddrive space constraints). I am told that the NS staff is currently beta testing v3.0, which is a Steam driven install. I would not want to get special consideration for the client side of the beta, however I wouldn't mind running the server version. It is my plan to send in my contribution to the project as soon as I can get my paypal account squared away. (small problem with remember which email address I used. LOL) But if more beta servers are needed or wanted, I would be happy to provide. Just another way to increase the community. I have a lot of respect for what has been produced in this project and can clearly see the efforts that went into making this a playable game.

The beta servers have been pretty empty the last few days. I guess that pesky Resource bug is scaring people off.

Yes, 3.0 is going to be Steam-only. It is in beta. I'm not certain if any Linux Steam server testing has been done (or if there is a Linux .so available at all), so as noted, you may want to speak with Joev about the requirements involved in providing a 3.0 Beta server.

/me runs screaming into the night!!!!!

How can you have a windows binary with no Linux binary.. That's like waking up with your head sewn to the carpet!

"Windows Server" two words that should never appear in this fashion.

Look on the bright side, you could pioneer the Linux server testing if they decide to go in that direction (and they better go in that direction since Linux servers are typically more stable and faster then Windows servers...)

BR, trust me.. I know the feeling. Thing is, it's a lot easier for Flayra to code and develop on the Windows side, as that's what he's used to. After all that is out of the way, the Magic Port Fairy comes along and bestows a Linux build on us.

All of the beta servers (except for AA) are running Linux.

Yo, BladeRunner. First things first, good on ya for reading the manual.

Second, forget all that crap on alien side. It's egregiously outdated at this juncture. That's fine though, because if you're like most people, you're starting out on marine side. It's designed so that's pretty much where the learning curve is softest. By the time you get tired of playing marine or commander all the time, you'll understand the game well enough by experience that aliens shouldn't be much of a problem after you get used to the controls.

Have fun and don't hump the armory.

Don't have a problem humping the armor. Just never seem to have enough rounds in the clip to get the job done. LOL

Aim a bit above the skulk in 2.0. Aim for the fade's feet, the onos' center mass (Not the shoulder, horns or rear end), and don't hit the wings of the lerk. Thankfully, the "Look I can fly straight into the ceiling and make half my model dissapear!!" bug has been fixed in 3.0.

Ask Joev about the server thing. He does ask you to turn over the entire box (root admin/pass and all) to keep the server .dlls secure, but if you're serious about helping the NS community, you shouldn't have that much of a problem. Besides, they turn it back to your control when they're done. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

If you don't confirm... then you aren't having your server host the beta test.

And good day to you sir.

I'm pretty sure the rules are non-negotiable, however if trust is your concern then relax, the people you give the server to are highly respective and if they mess with your server it will hurt Joev's companies image, Jarhedz, do I doubt anything could go wrong.

If you want to keep your server so you can continue to DL lots and lots of porn onto it 24/7, then I wouldn't give it up either.

So it's up to you, continue to make the pron DL libaries grow, or contribute to NS 3.0 beta testing. Your call dude.

As already stated earlier in this thread, I run a CS port and a DOD port. I would not be willing to give up my root password for testing of the beta. My other servers need to remain functional. And as much as I enjoy playing NS and want to see the project grow, I would not be willing to give up the entire server. The cost to my other projects would be too great.

<!--QuoteBegin--></span><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->So it's up to you, continue to make the pron DL libaries grow, or contribute to NS 3.0 beta testing. I understand the reasoning for a closed beta and I would not and will not argue that point. However, I do find your statements assuming the reasoning that I would not want to release control of my server insulting. If you are representing the NS community on this messageboard, perhaps you should take the time to read over your posts before you decide to insult a new supporter to the community.

    Moving on.

Assuming I wont be participating in the beta test, I will look forward to running my own NS port on my server when the steam version is released. I already am being pressured by my own player community to get a NS server up and running.
    =)

And yes I like pron. =P
