Smoke Effects Kill My Fps

Well, when i bought my new Radeon 9200 Video Card, i noticed that whenever i made any smoke effect it kinda blured and darkend the texture behind the smoke effect (to make it look more realistic i suppose) The only problem is, is that this kinda kills my fps. I've looked but can't seem to find a way to turn it off, wondered if anyone out there knows a way.
specs -
Anthlon 1800+
1600 mhz
512 ddr ram
9200 Radeon Video Card
512k modem
(My old Geforce 4 mx 420 never did this kind of effect)
