Outdoor mapping?
Would it be against the 'ethos' of NS to make an outdoor map? If it isn't, anyone got any suggestions for how would it 'fit in'? Some deserted planet perhaps?

Anyway, suggestions would be great!

Read the mapping guidelines, it explains it all in there. This topic has been brought up hugley ever since NS was released. Also if you make a post like "Outdoor Maps" I suggest the newbie mapping forum, description fits this well:

Whilst Thursday- is right, i may as well answer this thread, since it's here.

Yes, external locations on NS maps is pretty much against the ethos of NS. Not to mention the fact that the Half-Life engine doesn't handle large outside areas well and there's the issue of skulks wallwalking on the sky and lerks / jetpackers hitting "nothing" (The edge of the skybox).

While the occasional section at the most is fine, NS is supposed to be pretty claustrophobic, and essentially indoors.

The only situation you could probably get away with is the station you're on is situated on a planet or asteroid of some description, use your imagination.

I can't remember who's map it is (might be mr. bens) but they have a perfect example of an outdoor area for ns in the "show your screenshots" thread, pages 75/76

If there was many small skulk rabbit holes and plenty of alien grass and plants it would be ok i think. Just make some complex cliffs that sort of makes it act like an indoor map

    Bye bye r_speeds.

To make an outside environment look nice it would be pushing the limits of HL, to be honest. I'm talking realistic rock formations, grass, moss, water,, trees, everything.

If you use Nem's terrain generator you could do it with some noce r_speeds i think. It can automaticley add the hint bruhes for optimal r_speeds in the landscape. It also optimises the landscape on export to .map file so you don't get unwanted brushes.
