This will cause Windows to start only the required programs, no others. Should keep the virus offline and you can clean it then...
I think F8 works for XP too, but I'm not sure. Won't hurt if you try. Just remember to press it a few times, when your computer finished testing the memory.

assuming you don't use a dell or similar poses that block the scrn there should be a part that says press xx key to enter safemode
and, try running house call again, it will bork sometimes. But if it runs fully (any your gona have to just let it sit there) your computer will be clean (trend micro for the win)
