Best fps
I was in the forums today and heard people talking about the history of First person shooters.
I was just wondering what everyones favourites are/were. Please do not judge your opinions on graphics only, there is a thing called gameplay

I could probably continue revising this list for eternity ...

2)DOOM -- somebody had to start it. Took Wolfenstein 3D, made it actually require 3D (OK, so DOOM wasn't truly 3D either, but it was closer), and made it a lot more fun. I wasted endless hours playing this game and its sequel.
3)Unreal Tournament -- IMO, the best-balanced and most fun DM game out there. Took familiar weapons and added slight spins on them to add a whole bunch of depth. Great graphics, even for fairly-low end systems.
4)Marathon II -- so many years ahead of its time. Included things like leaning, looking around corners, akimbo weapons, secondary fires, fun alternate game modes, etc. The first FPS that I played with more than 1 other person.
5)Hexen -- took DOOM-style gameplay and added fun little things like character classes, non-linear gameplay, and loads of powerful magic items.
6)Duke Nukem 3D -- although I didn't care for the "prepubescent fantasy" theme, I think the game set standards for realistic level design, over-the-top weapons, and lots of other little touches.
7)Quake -- What a technical accomplishment. Probably the first true 3D FPS. The weapons were a lot of fun too, especially the grenade launcher.

2. Natural Selection - Doesn't need explanation, does it? Easily the best MP game out there.
3. Undying - The first game that actually managed to scare me for the right reasons. Great mapping, too.
4. Half - Life - Whatever I could be writing has already been written about this game. It's great, even although it's starting to fossilize.
5. Quake 3 - I actually liked its MP.
Multiplayers:
1)Natural Selection (though i havent played it :p)
2)Counter Strike (its a bit dm.... but im good at it... so who cares? Plus i got my own server where all my friends play :D)
3)Vampire Slayer (Prolly one of the most funnier mods for hl out there.... specially if you like vamp stories)
4)C&C Renegade (DAMN, THOSE CHOPPERS ROCK!!)
5)Science and Industry (Though im begining to stay away from this game, when i play it i have a lot of fun)
6)Avp2 (mwhhaahahahaha Predator pwnz ya all!!!)
7)Avp (hehehe predators and aliens own avp1 :))
8)Bf1942 (too bad my comp sucks.... i got extremely low fps, but i love this game....)
9)Warcraft3 & Sc: Brood Warz (RTS GAMES :D)
now for Single players:
1)Warcraft3 & Tribes
2)Avp2
3)Deus Ex & Operation Flashpoint
4)SC & SC:BW
5)C&C RedAlert 2 & C&C Tiberian Sun
6)GTA3 & Red Faction
1)unreal (SP) and UT (MP) - unreal had great maps, really atmospheric, UT has awesome MP
2) Quake 2 -cool SP and MP , love the shotgun (normal one)
3)Doom 2 -very fun MP
4) ROTT -very fun MP aswell, SP maps aren't that good, was quite revolutionary in it's time, first game i ever bought s;)
5)blakestone (planetstrike and aliens of gold)-very cool games based on the wolf3d engine, you could interact with scientists, had great graphix and cool anims
and yes no HL cuz i didn't like it. Xen *shudder*
3) Halo (SP too RPG like in trekking around the ring)
4) HL: DoD (so thats what you can begin to do with the HL Engine... NS should blow it away, when (if) it comes out...)
5) Max Payne (cool storyline with dynamic soundtrack and Awsome visual graphics, effects, and particle system. DOH!! that's not 1st person, oh well...)
6) HL: CS (just fun for when you don't want to think too much, but have an awsome time, i think...)
7) Unreal Tourney (all around very well done, plus great bot support)
8) Tribes(2 also) (great maps, configuration possibilities, and such, but too deep for someone who like UT and CS)
9) Red Faction was also awsome, but only played demo; cool engine and geo-mod technology.
...(for 3rd person shooters, MGS - though I never even got to finish the game, it was awesome; I'll be getting substance for Xbox)
2. Thief 2: The Metal Age
3. Quake 2
4. System Shock 2
5. Daikatana (I know, I know... but the multi-player is okay (so's the occasional sp bit))
That's actually all the FPS games I own. Hmmm. Perhaps we should have a strategy game vote as well?
AvP2 - Playing three different races is a really unique experience.
Medal of Honor: Allied Assault - This game is fun because most enemies are very hard to see because they really blend in with the background.
SP: Half-Life (Duh)
AvP2
UT (Against bots)
MP: AvP2 (Team Deathmatch, mmm)
Battlefield 1942
Half-Life's various mods
UT (Against humans)
I don't see how people can possibly even consider Red Faction on their list of favourites. So very shallow. The only thing that made it goodish was the terrain manipulation and the vehicles. But you only got to use each vehicle once in the SP part. It had potential but... Meh.

the_only_scythe@subdimension.com
And it's followed closely by:
2) Half-Life - with its MODs and excellent single player storytelling. This game, or at least its engine, will be around for a long time.
3) Deus Ex and System Shock 2 (Tied) - Both dont stray far from the original gameplay laid down in System Shock. Great games, great stories, excellent atmosphere, total immersion.
4) Duke Nukem 3D - It's interactivity was unparaelled at the time, as well as its attitude.
5) Rise of the Triad - Many a good multiplayer deathmatch game had in this very original, and slightly goofy title.
6) Wolfenstein 3D - This makes my list because not only was it fun killing hordes of Nazis, it made the FPS genre popular.
7) Doom - No list is complete without this one, this is game that fed the FPS fire even further.
There are many other great FPSs out there, but these are the ones that have definatly sealed thier place in my memory.
