Only the full install, 56kers
The first full service pack for Windows XP (SP1) is now available for download from Microsoft. It weighs in at 133MB (the smaller version won't be out for a couple days), and can be found here:

Windows XP SP1

So far, it seems to be pretty harmless, and I in fact have noticed the OS being generally a bit faster and more responsive in general. Plus there the usual nice bell and whistle additions. Here is the link to a list of all fixes, changes, and updates:

WinXP SP1 List of Fixes

And here are some that are of note to gamers in general:

Q312505 OpenGL-Based Program Causes Access Violation in Windows XP
Q321178 DirectX 8.1 Potential Issues in Games That Use Software Vertex Processing
Q319580 Windows XP Application Compatibility Update (April 10, 2002)
Q308381 Windows XP Application Compatibility Update (October 25, 2001)
Q318891 AMD PowerNow! Technology Support for Windows XP

Plus tons of security, stability, hardware, and other additions.

HUGE DISCLAIMER: Do not blame me if you install this and your machine is destroyed. Also, if you thought you'd 'stick it to the man' (aka steal) and have used a cracked CD, or one of the very well-known Corporate Product Key versions of XP Pro, this update will disable your bogus product license and render your machine unusable. I'm way ahead of your huge disclaimer. When I first heard of this service pack about three months ago, I figured it was really out to stop people like me who install corperate on many peoples machines when doing tech support (who needs a real job? you would be amazed at how many people can't install a home network). Who can afford XP or Office? Anyway, as soon as I heard that it was released I made a beeline to one of my favorite sites. I would tell you to bookmark it, but the name is easy to remember and your parents will probably think it's pr0n.

I think it is hilarious that the site FreeMantle linked has an article on the front page going on about how microsoft is keeping "confidential information" hidden from you, spying on your privacy, blah blah blah, and it turns out they are just talking about the Temp folder and your IE cache... (oh and those allevil cookies)

silly zealots, trix are for kids!

OHNO! I am an easily swayerd person, unfamiliar with computers, who believes anything I am told! I must launch a crusade against Microsoft! To those people who say this crap about cookies: Screw You! That site told me Microsoft is spying on me, and I desperately need to believe something to look smart in front of my computer literate friends! Down with Microsoft! I heard from some guy that there is this Lunix thing I can use instead! GOODGOOD!

Seriously though, I happened to buy XP exactly one day before the pack is release. So I cant exactly compare it. But from what I hear from other users, this thing is 13373r then something, uh, 1337.

Hey... um. They aren't talking about your temporary internet files. Read the entire article and go do some dosing if you are on windows 98. I did on a friends comp and the folders DO exist. Don't knock what you haven't tried.

Dude, I knock everything whether or not I have tried it. Its fun, and eliminates stress.

And I thought this was the propaganda forum for NS, not for M$...

btw, I'm not using XP because I find the activation system ideologically unacceptable.

Would this still be propaganda if I was posting links to an Opera update? I'm trying to offer a service to a large number of NS users, which will hopefully help them. If you don't use XP, there's no reason for you to be involved. I don't know how you are going to play NS on your Mac OS 10 or Suse Linux version though. That's the only way you could get out of this whole thing without looking like a complete hypocrite.

If you were advertising programs from more than one company, it would hardly qualify as propaganda. But even if you don't, I am able to acknowedge your good intentions; after all, we all know that Microsoft's horrible safety holes need constant fixing.

Am I a hypocrite for using Win98? It came with my computer, so I didn't really buy it. It might not be the greatest of OSs, but it runs the programs I want to run with acceptable reliability. But since I'm rapidly losing interest in computer games in general, my next OS might in fact be Linux.

Umm, what do you think, your computer manufacturer gave it to you out of the kindness of their hearts? You paid for an OEM copy of Windows when you bought your PC.

As for me offering assitance - I'm not telling people to go buy Microsoft productsm but instead offering them a way to improve ones they already bought. A public service announcement.

You can imagine things all you want but it doesn't make them true.
