Steam
<div class="IPBDescription">before I install...</div> Ok yea steam has been around for a while...
someon just give me the lowdown,
I downloaded this huge steam install file that was like 725mb or something a while back but I never installed it b/c everywhere I went (different forums) people where complaining about how much it sucked and there were heated debates and discussions everywhere.
But i think thats al been sorted out now and I want to try out the new CS and DoD.
SO i just install it and what then?
I can still use All Seeing Eye right?
Will my current custom skins, soundpacks and all that stuff for NS and other games be over writtian?
Thanks

And no, it would not overwrite your stuff unless you tell it to. I dont know why people complained about, you have to tick the checkbox YOURSELF for it to erase your stuff.

Well you can imagine they will change THAT soon.
The lowdown, as it is, it is <i>slightly</i> laggier than WON, and i mean only slightly, in my experience, and my fps have been maxing at 99.9 just the same as before. There's really nothing to worry about.
Steam installs itself to it's own directory, so it won't overwrite your current files since it's being installed to a different place, but when it's generating the cache files (If it needs to, which i doubt it will since you downloaded the full install) there is an option to delete the old files, make sure you don't accidently set it to delete if you don't want it to, but it's pretty obvious when that time comes, just read what Steam tells you rather than clicking the "next" button. As i said earlier, however, since you downloaded the full install, there's a very good chance that the caching won't occur, so don't sweat it too much. If you really are that paranoid, make a different backup of all your custom stuff elsewhere and you'll be fine.
Hope that's of some help. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

I installed everything however under the steamapps folder there is no @domain for me and i do have an account. All that is in there is just a bunch of GCF files for the various mods and hl itself?
So how would I install my custom stuff now?

Just start the game you wanna play once and load a map. After that just exit the game and check your folder. Steam should have unpacked the appropriate .gcf file and you'll see the usual folder structure.
Just copy your custom stuff in that folder (e.g. ...steam\steamapps\youremail@domain.com\Counter-Strike\cstrike\... models or sounds or whatever). Steam will automatically take the Custom stuff and user it over the normal stuff. Once the custom things are deleted it will re-use the old ones.
(I hope I explained it in a not so complicated way, my english kinda sux today <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo--> )
So a CS model would go in c:\Program Files\Steam\Steamapps\user@domain.com\Counter-strike\cstrike\models
and an NS map would go in c:\Program Files\Steam\Steamapps\user@domain.com\Half-Life\ns\maps
and a DOD sprite would go in C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\user@domain.com\day of defeat\dod\sprites
and to get the HL High definition pack (assuming you had it, and didn't delete all your won files), you want to extract the files from your old valve pak1.pak to c:\Program Files\Steam\Steamapps\user@domain.com\Half-Life\valve\
Ack. Paladin posted this stuff before me...
b/c I dont have a @domain file yet. I go into steamapps and see a bunch of GCF files and thats it.
why is my gamma and brightness so messed up? Everything is way way darker then it should be. When I go to brin gup the brightness and gamma up a little and then rejoin the server it doesnt do a thing?
Any ideas?
