Boxwars

Really cool mod
Just last night a whole bunch of guys in the IRC room got together and played boxwars for a few hours, and it was a blast! It has some really good playability, especially since when they say you can't tell which boxes are real people, they're serious. You can't, which is perticularily fun when sniping (Remember? ) I would suggest that anyone that hasen't played this game yet goes and plays it right now, you wont regret it

Boxwars is the type of mod that you HAVE to play for 5 minutes, and whether you play it more after that is up to you. I thought it was entirely too easy to snipe, mostly because you're not instantly recognized as something that can shoot. Heck, even I was doing quite a bit of sniping. And the people who won a lot of the time just became the scientist (you get points for being a scientist for as long as possible) and camped away from everyone else. Gameplay issues aside, it's a fun little mod.

When I first heard of it I thought pffft, sounds rubbish. Then I heard a few people talk about it and thought, well, maybe I should have a look at some point. On PHL Beta3 of boxwars was advertised so I decided to look and it sounds really interesting so Im downloading it now (and bear in mind im on 56k so dont undertake these tasks lightly, its only 6.6mb though).

I played the version before this one on LAN with 2 others in my 3d animation class. Or tried to; the player models were default half life models for some reason.

My first expirience with Boxwars... (Latest version mind you).

Kinda like watching a boring Slideshow... ¬_¬ Only server then had a average latency of the upper 1000's.

I hosted a server just to stuff around in without any intention of people joining. In about a minute, 6 people had joined! This mod needs some more servers, if a crappy 128Kb/s upload server on the east coast of Australia can get 6 people in a minute, a big server would fill up faster than a wombat's tonker!

P.S. No, I don't know what a tonker is either but I'm told that's how we Australians talk.

What an incredibly crappy mod. I really wanted it to be good. I love the concept, no lie. Crate Deathmatch (Quake III), while only having two maps, was an arseload of fun. Boxwars is laggy, ugly as hell, and there's no way to switch weapons. It's great having an RPG and being not able to use it.

You can switch weapons but some classes like the light extra fast one cant use the rocket launcher.

played the old version on lans only and was always great fun tych ~ the problem with the models we discovered was unless you installed the old version in exactly the same path with exact same folder name (inclusive of capital letters) anyone connecting to the server would have default hl models. At least thats what we found out, so we played a kinda "hunt teh box" gameplay mode. great fun *downlaods new version*

it always confuses me how some people can make up false facts about good mods and make them look bad
Boxwars had no problems when I played. I never lagged, I never had any problems.

This has got to be the strangest mod I have ever played. I had a bit of fun showing it to a friend (friend: 'what's with the crates?&#39.

The only problem I have is finding servers for it.

Oh yes, I must be lying. If you say it's a good mod, it can't have any problems. Boxwars had no problems when you played. I played both on LAN and online, and whenever someone shot something, a giant lag spike would be created. Now uh, about the no HUD/no weapon switching - I've heard some complain about it, and others say there's no problem. Wouldn't know how to fix this, and don't really care.

So, just because you like crappy mods, it doesn't mean they're good.

and just because you think they're crappy doesn't mean they're bad, I suggest you agree to disagree.

My ideas:

New Weapons:
Nailgun
Watergun

New Gamemode:
Teams, Red vs. Blue -or- MGH Shipping Co. vs. GH International Transport

Rambox(Rambo), Gets Nailgun in which you don't have to reload and it's slightly stronger, and the player gets larger amount of health also recharges.

Capture the Golden Nail, CTF standard rules.

New Equip:
Tougher Lumber upgrade, works like armour

Note: 1111th Post!

The only problem I had was it lagging horribly when I used the flamethrower. I encountered no other serious bugs at all.

I gave it a try. The lag was horrible, then the crosshair and the HUD disappeared. Couldn't switch weapons at all. Deleted it 5 minutes later.

These game-breaking bugs should send a clear message to all those who still wonder why the NS playtest lasts so long.

Maybe because you were the "small" class and could only use tiny guns? This is also why NS will have a manual to read, just like boxwars did...

Bleh, I did read the "tutorial", and chose that "Mr. Oak" thing as a class. And still the weapons would *only* switch once I drained the ammo of the one I was wielding.

I can imagine showing this to my friend:

"Dude, these levels suck. They are just boxes! There should be other types of levels."

In fact, I would bet hard cash he says something akin to that. I just know it.

There was probably a server up when he played. Trust me, there are good days and bad days. Anyways, the disapperaing HUD thing happened to me, it... only happened that one time though. :|
