Messed Up Xp Boot...

how do I fix it?
I think it was StyleXP that did it, and I don't know how to undo it... now when I turn on my compooter, I have to make the choice between Windows XP Professional and Windows XP Professional (bootscreen). I have no clue what the difference is, and having this screen come up at startup is really annoying when I only have 1 OS and don't want to have to choose... how do I get it back to normul?

Go to folder options-view-Show/protect hidden system operating files. than disable it.
Go to boot.ini in C:/ and delete the 3rd party line, most likely the one with (bootscreen).
If something bad happens go to DOS and type Fixboot or soemthing like thjat.

Never, ever, ever, ever edit the BOOT.INI unless you are 100% sure of what you are doing. Most mistakes will lead to you system being unbootable. Post up a copy here of your BOOT.INI file (c:\boot.ini - it will be hidden, so check your hidden file/folder options in Explorer), and someone will give you clear instructions of what to do.

Again, never, ever, ever, ever edit the BOOT.INI unless you are 100% sure of what you are doing. You can make your system volume unmountable and have to spend a lot of boring time repairing it.

you people rool for your help -- luckily before I even had to fix it manually, I realized there was an option in StlyeXP to undo what it did to boot.ini sorry for the trouble.

Ah, MonsE always has time to trouble shoot some poor chap's PC.

Though he never seemed to have time to listen to me whine about how my site was crashing and burning, or how my life was falling apart...

*runs into the corner and weeps*

Ok, this is somewhat similar and maybe you gents could help me out with this. I'm a computer tech for the dorms at my college. This girl somehow or another broke her xp so it default boots in safe mode and if you hit f8 during boot up and choose "start windows normally" it still goes into safe mode. I'm a tad perplexed as I had never seen that happend before. Any ideas how to fix that? All help would be greatly appreciated.

If she's backed up fairly recently (or if you can copy vital files over) try a system restore. That's what I'd do, it might be killing a fly with a cannon, but it should work.

Hmmm. Can you post up a copy of the C:\BOOT.INI here? It sounds like it has the /safeboot switch stuck in the default profile. Also, you can post up the C:\MSDOS.SYS file, which may have the bootsafe setting set to 1 by accident. You can just post the contents of the files if you like...

Monse, you're a genius. I went into her msconfig and checked the boot.ini and sure enough, /bootsafe was the culprit. Got it working fine now. My deepest thanks for helping me figure that one out. If you're ever at the University of Illinois I owe you a beer

Retarded Question 1: How can I access DOS on WindowsXP (...probably a run command, but I tried dos and msdos)?

RQ2: Does it work like starting Win95 or Win98 in MS-DOS mode?

I want to use it for some really old games...one of them works, but another needs me to enter some commands, and I have no idea how to do that without being in DOS (but as the first question notes, I have no idea how to get there).

StyleXP is teh evil, thats why I dont use it. I had a... bad experience with it.

So anyway: I went to change the Style I used, then everything that got changed turned pitch black, and it froze, forcing me to restart my computer. When WinXP started back up, it was still black, obviously. So I poked in my Start menu until I found StyleXP, but my free trial was over! D:... so, now really angerfieded, I go to my Display Properties, which wasnt very hard being that you only have to right click on the desktop. Then I go to the Appearance menu, and, of course, there were no appearance settings left. StyleXP completely b0rked. I then went to the folder where all the skins were stored by using the Search function and I find the silver WinXP style (the one im using now) then once that was applied, I was not blind any more ! Then I went and removed StyleXP, that evil evil proggy.

1: Start | run | CMD
2. Not really. But you can set application compatibility mode for applications using a regular shortcut. Just check out the 'Compatibility' tab on the shortcut by right-clicking, then selecting properties.

Really old DOS stuff is tricky in XP.

Though there are ways to (hopefully) still get those old DOS games to work, even when WinXP's command promt laughs at your need for nostalgia.
DOSbox is a freely downloadable, open source DOS emulator. Yes, old consoles aren't the only things people write emulators for.
You'll need to read the instructions to learn how to "mount" the folder with the program you want, but after that it'll get treated like a drive. Not to mention you don't need to do any random F# button pressing on boot, or any of the crazy boot disk stuff you remember from back in the day just to get expanded & extended memory perfect.

[edit]I never realized how funny it is to read the changelog of a modern program and see lines like "Added VESA VBE 2.0 support for 256 color modes"

Just curious as to what the proper way of fixing this problem would have been. My friend recently had trouble with this, and it happened to me a while ago, in which case I ended up reformatting:

"It says the file C:\windows\system32\config\system is either corrupt or missing. I've tried booting with last known good configuration and the same message comes up. It tells me to use the WINXP CDs recovery and repair tool but I dunno how"

I took one look at the repair tool, and my mind just blanked out; was a lot easier just starting from scratch again.

That file is the 'SYSTEM' section of the registry (hkey local machine\system). When it doesn't load, neither does most of your hardware and services. Last known good won't work in that situation because the 3 LNG sub-sections of the registry are all contained within that single file. Using the recovery console would have theoretically allowed you to fix that file, or reach an ERD disk (you make an occasional repair disk, right?).

Neither here nor there after a rebuild though. Cool stuff about DOSbox, Marik, I never saw that app before.

Thanks for the emulator Marik.

...I got the mounting down, but it just doesn't want to accept my game. It'll gaive me the splash screen with Interplay, but then it quits out on me, doesn't go to the FTL logo majiger. I don't think it's installing itself right.

does DOSbox emulate old sound cards too? or do you have to play in a wasteland devoid of sound?
