great flick
Has anyone seen this flick yet?

I thought it was awesome. Upon entering the theater I thought this flick would be ok, but it wasn't, it was totally great. Acting was superb, story drew you in, and all in all, it was a really good film. So far I thought it was one of the best films I've seen at the theater this year.

Indeed, its easily one of the best films of the year, if not THE best. I thought Tom Cruise did a great job in it, and I dislike Tom Cruise. For those who have seen it, the film is a little like a Japanese Dances with Wolves. heh.

I just love how the movie was done, with the emphasis on the Japanese culture and etc. One nice touch I particularly like is how language was done. They didn't just have everyone speak english, and there was a fair amount of subtitling. For the characters who did speak English, it made sense that they did so. They also didn't just make it your typical hollywood film with violence & sex thrown in for no reason whatsoever.

I have great interest in the Samuri and thus I am reluctant to go see the movie. Simply because I know the n00bs in Hollywood will ruin everything about them. Tell me, did they get it right .

Overall, I believe it to be pretty accurate. Some parts like parts of the culture seems to be a little off sometimes, but overall I think it's pretty good. The scenes of Seppuku were correct, to my knowledge, and the general duty of a samurai seems to be correct.

Yes, the portrayal of the Samurai were very accurate to the best of my knowledge. Not just the generic Hollywood bs.

Also there is a scene with ninjas! They totally flip out and kill you. Actually the ninja's are portrayed realistic too, as assassins with no honor and such. Nice touch. They're only there for one scene though. But they totally flip out and kill you.

Also they don't bs the movie up with any sort of magic or whatnot that people usually tend to throw in when doing asian martial arts stuff. The only even somewhat supernatural element to the entire movie is when the head samurai guy has a vision near the beginning of the movie.

I wish they took more time in portraying a larger amount of the ninja weapons and such. The scene was really awesome though.

I noticed one of the ninjas had Sai's, that was cool. Also they did some cool throwing star stuff :D

This might be worth watching if you guys say it's good... but you guys also said that Kill Bill and Matrix: Revolutions were good...

Kil Bill and The Last Samurai are totaly different films. The later strives for a realistic portrayal of the samurai, discluding the cheesy gore and etc. There were a couple cheesy scenes that if you were to delve into more critically would seem off, but none the less the film put a lot of emphasis on historal accuracy than on any other thing IMO. The fight scenes were really cool and in many ways cooler than Kill Bill. Throughout the film they portrayed the samurai practicing bushido, kendo, honor, and etc. One thing for sure is that this film was not hollywoodifed. It would make Japan proud of their own culture.

    Does this seem accurate?

I saw this film, and I have studied Japanese culture.

It rocked. It was far better then anything i've ever seen. This could easily beat out any film for Best Picture. It was a bit like Dances with Wolves, but the battle scenes were...epic. They don't go all mushy on you, with Tom Cruise and the Japanese woman, instead it's very well done.

Having sword-fought, the way they hold the boken's (wooden swords) is very accurate.

Everything about this movie is...pwn. I love the end-battle, because it doesn't fail historically. The Samurai's dress in the traditional armor and everything is just...pwn.

I just watched this a few hours ago; between LOTR and this, I have to say that this definetely stirred up much more emotion. LOTR was great for the eyecandy and all; but Last Samurai had a superior depth and drama to it, if you ask me.

One thing I just couldn't stop noticing... the silent samurai that is initially guarding Cruise =

All right.. I have been inexplicably convinced to see it.

The lack of mushiness is a big plus. There is no reason for that to happen.

But I will really see it for the good stuff.

dude, I once heard that just because some kid dropped a spoon, a ninja flipped out and killed the whole town!

I just saw this movie yesterday, and i thought it was absolute pwnage. Favorite scenes:
    - Chopping off the head of the last assassin, but it looked like it was still connected
    - All the arrows killing the soldiers, and one guy in the middle looking around confused
    - Chopping down through one of the soldiers' guns and into his head
    - Ninjas!!!!!

Anyone else think that the all of the samurai rushes.. and in fact the entire way they fought that last battle (besides the burning things) was really dumb? They should have done guerilla warfare, not cavalry charges. Of all people, Tom Cruise should have known what to do...

I just got back from it. VERY GOOD MOVIE. Only part I think they might have edited better to make it flow was right after he gets captured and he has the nightmares. The film itself is so simple its amazing. No epic plot, or story twists, just a really good character driven movie. One of the best of 2003.
