With a couple competent rines and some reliable welding noobs, HA trains just don't fail.... assuming there's no smart oni who stomp spam for the skulks.

Jetpacks on the other hand have failed way more then they succed. They're so much more fun, but they encourage ramboing, and they are weak to OCs.

with HA trains, ramboing will make you die fast, because all the aliens go after you since you're alone, and heavy armor just isn't that great for avoiding attacks.

The way I normally do it is that with small games i go with jetpack (like less then 5 people) any more then that and I go HA.

HMGs are also much more effective against Oni and Fades, but if you can aim well, shotty tends to work better for skulks and gorge, and if you've got a jetpack and/or doing close fighting, shotties tend to work real well... well, at least if you know where the hitboxes are located in 2.1

(Fades: shoot for the legs)
(Onos: shoot for the middle)
(If you need a visual, get some motion tracking and look at one of them, and then shoot at the blue circle)

jetpacks are good for rushing the hive but as said, a few oc's own them pretty quickly. theyre good for sneaking off through vents and putting up secret phases or taking down undefended res nodes but they usually dont have enough room to manuver when going up againist aliens and thats where heavies come in :o

I dont usualy use JP's because the new patch has made them simply Jump-Packs. They cant avoid attacks long enough to kill things and they dont have enough vertical thrust to avoid things like OC's fades or onii without setting down and taking hits.

A skilled HA train however will kill anything in seconds keeping it nice and safe from an Onos or two. The only thing that I have found that actualy kills HA trains is 1) xenocide 2) Aliens attack when the entire team is looken the other way (at a WOL or something) 3) Mass Onos rushes - and even then many onos will go down as well.

When's the last time you used a JP? They are mush more than jump packs, granted, they are much less than their 1.4 counter parts. But they are still powerful.

If it's a short/fast-paced game and you want to win quickly, go for the JP rush. If its a stale-mate, then go for the HA. Of course this all depends on the aliens strategies....OC's = jp pwnz0r.

Heavy Armor, it's just alot safer if you aren't comfortable giving your marines something that requires a little skill to use. Not to mention so many of the maps have cramped corridors with overhangs to get stuck on. I would kill to have a digital button to use with the jetpack, a la ps2 controller. Depress slightly for less thrust, depress hard for max thrust. Right now all you can really do is give small button taps for slight bursts, which can be frustrating even for veteran jpers. Really, HA trains with an assortment of weapons are pretty unstoppable, as in shotguns, HMGS, and GLs, which some comms seem to forget. They just hand out HMGS, and sadly sometimes forget the other weapons. Not to mention welders... Yes, I've actually had a comm not give HA welders.

yeah heavies are definitely superior jetpacks but jetpacks are still very effective for specific uses like rushes and fair better by themselves if they know how to use the jetpack. then theres the extra cost factor + welders

I was playing a great combat game.. Went instant jetpack, and was ripping up the hive with just an LMG. Got two levels, got myself a shotty. I instantly died.

Flayra finally added weights to weapons. So an HMG/JPer is going to be a LOT LOT less manuverable and have a lot less thrust then an LMG toting JP.

Just something to think about.

Man, I was rocking that hive Until I got the shotty.
