Compressing Steam...

723 mb..
To get right to the point, I need to be able to compress the full steam isntall (723 mb) to about 700mb so that I can burn it onto a CD! As of right now, I have no friggn clue what to use after compressing to a .tar file and a .zip (they never got lower than 721mb)......I really want to burn this for a friend and because I want to put it on a different computer, without downloading (im 56k). I've tried using the network and it just freezes up right away....Any ideas?

from what I recall you could fit 723 mb on the CD, but it would be pushing it
[I will put the name of the program that lets you do it as soon as I remember what it's called]
or, break out winzip and do spanning archives on multiple floppies

Just warning...you risk damaging the data and/or damaging the CD by over-writing 700MB. But yes, possible if your burner and software allows it (some recent ones do, sony comes to mind).
I've never seen a CD larger then 700 megs Unless you get into DVDs, and I dont have 300 bucks to shell out for a decent burner, and wowie, 20 bucks for 5 DVD-Rs...
I've no idea what Windows programs you can use to do this, but on Linux there's a useful little GNU utility called 'split'; I wouldn't be surprised if there's a stand-alone Win32 port. Something like the following should work:
split -b 500M reallybigfile.exe reallybigfile.exe.
You can reassemble the file on (probably) any Windows machine by bringing up the command prompt and using a command a bit like the following (I'm a bit unsure about the syntax):
copy reallybigfile.exe.aa:reallybigfile.exe.ab reallybigfile.exe
a) compres one part to size of cd1, then put the rest on cd2 (winrar lets you split files into iddy bitty bits)
b) chop it up and put it on about 300 disks
or, get a 750-800MB CD-R
